# Nathan Houle > Software Engineer Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/nathanhoule Experienced software engineering professional. I've worked in the data infrastructure, food and grocery, healthcare spaces and love new challenges. ## Work Experience ### Staff Software Engineer @ Netlify Jan 2025 – Present ### Senior Software Engineer @ Netlify Jan 2024 – Jan 2025 Part of the Composable Platform team, building out an SDK that enables partners and end users to extend the Netlify platform. ### Contract Software Engineer @ Unknown Jan 2023 – Jan 2023 Short-term contract projects in the medical sector. ### Founding Software Engineer @ GatherMade Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 | San Francisco Bay Area GatherMade was a marketplace that delivered home-style meals prepared by professional and home chefs to their local communities. As part of an engineering team of three, I built the e-commerce, delivery ops, accounting, PIM, and marketing systems. These systems spanned the full e-commerce (customer-facing e-commerce website, product and chef information mastering, marketing communications, metrics and analytics, etc.) and operations (order management, product data mastering, customer support, chef payouts, etc.) lifecycles. ### Senior Software Engineer @ SamaCare Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | San Francisco Bay Area SamaCare builds software that helps to minimize the administrative burdens that make healthcare difficult to deliver to patients. In addition to iterative feature work, some of the initiatives I led at SamaCare included: - Documenting our hand-maintained AWS infrastructure by writing internal documentation and adopting Terraform, an infrastructure-as-code tool. This reduced costs along the way by cleaning up orphaned infrastructure, made it easy to scale down existing infrastructure allocations, and made it easier for any team member to change existing and deploy new infrastructure. - Adopting standard reliability and monitoring practices (including centralized JSON-based logging, metrics collection, on-call pager rotations, etc.) - Improving our security posture, e.g. by applying least-privilege principles wherever possible (more restrictive IAM policies, per-application tokens, removing shared credentials from Git repositories in favor of revocable per-developer credentials, etc.) - Building out a UI kit to make our UIs more consistent and easier to build - Designing and building a fault-tolerant product that allowed a customer to embed medical preauthorizations into their internal CRM tool ### Senior Software Engineer @ Good Eggs Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 | San Francisco Bay Area As part of our WMS team, I maintained and expanded our home-grown warehouse management system. I built new systems that helped to improve our pick and prep processes, reducing labor costs and improving inventory accuracy, and made incremental improvements to existing systems, like adding scan-on-delivery features to our delivery app. As part of our ecommerce team, I played a key role planning and implementing a large-scale project to modernize our aging ecommerce platform and customer-facing apps. I helped to address immediate maintainability concerns that prevented deploys, and in the longer term, planned and implemented a project to incrementally pay down technical debt while building out the APIs that powered our new React/React Native-based customer-facing apps. ### Software Engineer @ Good Eggs Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 | San Francisco Bay Area ### Software Engineer @ Segment Jan 2014 – Jan 2017 | San Francisco Bay Area Built and maintained a system that ingested high volumes (30k+ RPS) of unstructured user data, directing it into tools where users could take action on their data. I built integrations, improved the underlying infrastructure as volume grew to improve maintainability and stability, and improved the product's resource efficiency to reduce costs by ~90%. As part of a small team, I planned and implemented the first version of Segment's Cloud Sources, a product that pulls data from other end-user systems and ingests them efficiently into customers' centralized data warehouses. I also led a large-scale maintainability improvement project on our primary data-collection library, one of the most frequent sources of SLA-affecting outages in our integrations product. Also mentored engineers as part of a junior SE mentorship program that aimed to move technically-minded employees from our support team into our engineering team. ### Engineering Team Lead @ Hack Reactor Jan 2013 – Jan 2014 | San Francisco Bay Area Led a small team of engineers in a small startup environment. Designed and implemented various internal software services, including curriculum management software, realtime help request systems, and an internal project management system. Designed, implemented, and documented continuous integration and deployment systems for internal software. ### Instructor @ Hack Reactor Jan 2013 – Jan 2013 Web development instructor at an immersive technical school. Taught large class sessions, interviewed incoming students, provided one-on-one tutoring with current and future students, and designed algorithms-oriented curriculum. ### Assistant Editor @ No Starch Press Jan 2012 – Jan 2012 Worked with authors from inception to develop and edit their manuscripts with the end goal being a better book all around. On the acquisitions side, I solicited subject experts to write books and evaluated book proposals and manuscripts. ### Administrative Assistant @ No Starch Press Jan 2011 – Jan 2012 ### Publishing Intern @ International Association of Business Communicators Jan 2010 – Jan 2011 ### Web Intern @ Santa Barbara Independent Jan 2010 – Jan 2010 | Santa Barbara, California Area ### Senior Online Editor, Staff Writer, Copyeditor @ Daily Nexus Jan 2008 – Jan 2010 | Santa Barbara, California Area ## Education ### B.A. in English, Professional Editing University of California, Santa Barbara ### Software Engineering Hack Reactor ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/ndhoule - Website: https://www.nathanhoule.com --- Source: https://flows.cv/nathanhoule JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/nathanhoule/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-01
