# Nathaniel Thompson > Product Design Engineer at Apple Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/nathanielthompson Since graduating from Carnegie Mellon University, I have been exposed to a unique set of interdisciplinary projects ranging from the design and testing of modular 2-Axis stabilized gimbals to the Model Y audio experience to a mechanical jump seat to imitate Steve McQueen's infamous car chase scene from Bullitt (1968) for the Detroit Motor Show. I am now applying this knowledge and creativity in the design of mechanical solutions at Apple developing the iPhone. Feel free to reach out to me by email [nthompso13@gmail.com], or check out what I have been designing on the side on my portfolio website [www.nthompson.me]. ## Work Experience ### Product Design Engineer @ Apple Jan 2023 – Present | Cupertino, California, United States ### Mechanical Engineer @ Iron Ox Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 | San Carlos, California, United States ### Mechanical Design Engineer, Autopilot & Electronics Product Design @ Tesla Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | Palo Alto, California, United States ### Mechancal Engineer @ Ascendant Engineering Solutions Jan 2018 – Jan 2021 | Austin, Texas Area Design, prototype, and test cutting edge opto-electro-mechanical assemblies for both consumer products and defense programs. ### Contract Mechanical Design Engineer @ Produktworks Design Jan 2018 – Jan 2018 | Austin, Texas Contracted to independently design, quote, and install an automated platform for sealing off a spiral staircase in a residential observatory to reduce air turbulence during long exposure photographs. ### Mechanical Design Engineer @ ACASS-SYSTEMS Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Greater Omaha Area Completed FEA, mechanism design, and documentation under tight deadlines for automated and structural elements found on the 2017/2018 world tours of Lorde, The Killers, Thomas Rhett, & Keith Urban etc. ### Mechanical Engineer Intern @ Zucker Institute for Applied Neurosciences Jan 2015 – Jan 2016 | Charleston, SC Employed as an engineering design consultant developing and rapidly prototyping "napkin sketch" medical devices proposed by neuro-surgeons and practitioners at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Designed and prototyped a vertebral body replacement device fabricated by metals additive manufacturing capable of side independent extendability of 180%. Additionally, I collaborated on projects such as a portable concussion detection device and a modular reference adapter for brain surgery. ### Undergraduate Research Assistant @ Carnegie Mellon University Jan 2014 – Jan 2015 | Robotics Lab Research under Dr. Maxim Likhachev whose studies interest high-dimensional planning based on experience autonomous robotics. Received $1,000 in grants through CMU to design and build a quad-copter capable of FPV and autonomous flight ### Undergraduate Research Assistant @ UPMC Jan 2013 – Jan 2013 | Pediatric Critical Care Division Research under Rajesh Aneja, MD focused on sepsis and the neural consequences of acute inflammatory shock. Received $4,000 in grants through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to continue research in summer 2014. ## Education ### Master of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering Carnegie Mellon University ### Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Carnegie Mellon University ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/nathaniel-thompson-7901b098 - Portfolio: https://nthompson.me/ --- Source: https://flows.cv/nathanielthompson JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/nathanielthompson/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-29
