# Nicolaas Kaashoek > Graduate Student at Princeton Location: Greater Boston, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/nicolaas PhD student studying computer science at Princeton. My research interests are broadly in systems with a focus on fault-tolerance. ## Work Experience ### Undergraduate Research Assistant @ MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 | Greater Boston Area Worked in CSAIL's PDOS research group with Professor Robert Morris, focusing on distributed systems ### Software Engineer Intern @ Microsoft Jan 2019 – Jan 2019 | Greater Seattle Area Worked in the Azure Storage team at Microsoft, specifically on the geographic replication of customer data between datacenter regions. ### Software Engineer Internship @ VMware Jan 2018 – Jan 2018 | Palo Alto, California Worked on Dispatch, an open source serverless computation framework being developed at VMware through the xLabs program. I was tasked with increasing dispatch's ability to scale. Also gained experience with Google's new Knative framework. ### Software Engineering Intern @ GoDaddy Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | San Francisco Bay Area Member of the Core Services team. Work included working on a personalization service currently rolled out to half a million customers and soon to be rolled out to all. This entailed full stack web development along with infrastructure work and basic interaction with machine learning mechanisms. ### Software Engineer Internship @ Samsara, Inc Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | San Francisco Bay Area Full stack web development to implement functionality for Samsara's Dashcam, which is still in use today. The feature allows customers to view videos collected by the camera when it fires for specific events like harsh accelerations. Also worked on installing the dashcams in vehicles. ### Research Assistant @ MIT CSAIL Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 I was responsible for coding and developing an IOS application to help people track their daily activities. The application was used in tandem with machine learning techniques and signal processing to result in an application that will be able to detect what a person is doing at any given time. ### Student Researcher @ MIT PRIMES Jan 2012 – Jan 2014 | Cambridge, MA Worked with MIT graduate students to develop a mechanism in which students were incentivized to accurately and efficiently grade each others' work using game theory. Resulted in a paper published at ACM's conference on game theory. ### Programmer @ MIT CSAIL/ Newton-Wellesley Hospital Jan 2013 – Jan 2013 | Greater Boston Area Designed and created a web application for Endometriosis patients to keep in contact with their surgeons, providing easy access to information both before and after surgery. Implemented a strong security plan: the server sees only encrypted data. The application is in use at Newton-Wellesley hospital. ## Education ### Doctor of Philosophy - PhD in Computer Science Princeton University ### Master of Engineering - MEng in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Massachusetts Institute of Technology ### Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Massachusetts Institute of Technology ### Lexington High School ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/nicolaas-kaashoek-5307387b --- Source: https://flows.cv/nicolaas JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/nicolaas/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-29
