As community lead, I had primary responsibility for our users' relationships -- both the relationships they have with one another, as well as the ones they have with our team. Partnering closely with Product, I dove deep into both qualitative and quantitative data to understand customer needs, then used that knowledge to guide decisions on business strategy and feature development. I created the guidelines that ensured a safe, vibrant community and I designed policies and scalable systems to enforce those guidelines. As the person who oversaw "all the words stuff," from UI elements to email to editorial features, I directed a key part of our user experience. I collaborated regularly with engineers, UX designers, legal, and PR, and had one direct report. ### VP of Content @ Figment Jan 2011 – Jan 2013 Figment is a digital writing community for teens and young adults. Winner of the L.A. Times Book Prizes' Innovators Award in 2012. Acquired by Random House in 2013. I led Figment's content marketing and display advertising businesses, original content development, and social media strategy. Partnering with publishers and other brands, I designed innovative programming to engage young readers and writers around authors, titles, and other products. ### Writer/Editor @ Slate Magazine Jan 2008 – Jan 2011 For a time I was the lead writer and editor for Brow Beat, Slate's culture blog, and an editor at DoubleX, the magazine's section for women. I was a regular contributor to Slate's popular "Explainer" column, writing on politics, language, weird science, religious doctrine, and beyond. I now know whether you can get drunk from using too much Purell and why everything was so much bigger in prehistoric days. Two big interactive pieces I spearheaded research for--Slate's "80 Over 80" (the 80 most powerful, influential and energetic octogenarians in America) and "Procrasti-Nation" (interviewing people from every profession we could think of about how they tended to waste time on the job)--were listed in Slate's 20th anniversary list of Slatiest Slate Pieces of All Time. ### Editor @ Barnes and Noble/Spark Publishing Jan 2004 – Jan 2007 Developed and executed a wide range of titles, including a series of graphic novels and books on breaking into the film and fashion industries.
