# Paul Garell > SDE @ Amazon Location: New York, New York, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/paulgarell prgarell@gmail.com I am an recent grad of Cornell University passionate about using computer science and engineering to create a brighter future! I am specializing in machine learning, embedded software, and cloud infrastructure. At Cornell I lead a project team that looks to bring healthcare solutions to resource constrained communities. One project I specifically led is a low cost EMG prosthetic hand with a 99% cost reduction compared to equal functioning hands on the market. I specifically contributed with embedded programming and system design, alongside leading a team of 10 engineers. Additionally, I lead the development of a new method for predicting pre term births for pregnant mothers. Leveraging the power of machine learning in coordination with patented technology, I hope to lessen burden of unpredicted pre-term births. Some of my technical skills include proficiency in Python, MATLAB, Java, C/C++ and OCaml as well as comfortability using complex data structures and common (and some uncommon) algorithms. Additionally, I am experienced in working on AWS and cloud infrastructure from a previous internship at AWS. Please reach out to me! ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Amazon Jan 2024 – Present | New York, New York, United States - First place Hackathon Fall 2025 AWS Platform Experience - Automated Shortfall Billing through a scalable, serverless architecture with deep system observability metrics for tracking time to bill delivering $50M FCF - Defined, designed, and drove a team of engineers to build a extensible AI native solution for last touch automation covering 15% of AWS revenue - AWS Monetization ### Lead Researcher @ Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University Jan 2022 – Jan 2024 - Prototyping a patented device to predict the time of labor in pregnant women using impedance spectroscopy - Designing custom printed circuit boards using EAGLE to interface software and hardware for low-latency performance - Implementing C++ and python to obtain and algorithmically filter impedance data - Leveraging machine learning models to improve prediction accuracy and efficiency - Directing a team of 8 undergraduate students across different disciplines including computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, and mechanical engineering ### Electrical Subteam Lead Engineer @ Cornell Engineering World Health Jan 2021 – Jan 2024 | Ithaca, New York, United States -Design, prototype, and implement low-cost solutions to medical problems targeting low-income communities -Leverage artificial intelligence to develop an armband for a more natural BCI interface, in collaboration with Invictus BCI -Implementing Python library openCV to detect objects using a camera and a Rasberry pi, in collaboration with Aurolabs -Designing glasses with stereo cameras to detect objects, obstacles, and text to reproduce audibly for people that are visually impaired (Aurolabs) -In a collaboration with the United Nations designing low cost motorbike-ambulances to aid in transportation of pregnant women to hospitals in the Ivory Coast ### Software Dev Engineer Intern @ Amazon Jan 2023 – Jan 2023 | New York City Metropolitan Area - Created observability telematics using AWS IoT, AWS CDK and Grafana to analyze live CAN bus data from a vehicle - Build and deployed IoT device simulators using boto3 to create live test data for automated testing and CI/CD on cloud - Developed low latency pipeline to transmit data from vehicle to IoT device to cloud with performance indicators - Utilized embedded linux and Yocto to optimize performance and reproducibility across hardware ### Physics Teaching Assistant @ Cornell University Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 | Ithaca, New York, United States - Undergraduate teaching assistant for General Physics II (electricity and magnetism) -Teach physics concepts and problem-solving methods -Engage students by providing applicable examples -Assess and grade student's understanding of laboratory physics ### Medical Scribe @ Department of Neurosurgery Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | Carmel Hamlet, New York, United States Medical scribe at Putnam Hospital in the department of neurosurgery - Recorded all aspects of provider-patient encounters - Notated and organized using electronic medical records ### Hardware Intern @ Invictus BCI Incorporated Jan 2021 – Jan 2021 -Integrated circuitry into an armband to create a near-natural functioning prosthetic -Worked on designing the main circuit board and electrodes for EMG -Tested and prototyped functionality of human-computer interface ### Research Intern @ New York Medical College Jan 2019 – Jan 2021 | New York, United States -Implemented experiments to utilize the mTOR pathway to therapeutically target cancer stem cells in a wet lab -Administered rapamycin, pp242, Torin and other drugs to reduce proliferation and migration of Glioblastoma -Analyzed and prepared data using Microsoft Excel and R for publication in academic journals -Trained and supervised 3 new lab members; demonstrated techniques and taught protocols ### Teacher @ Coditum Coding Classes Online Jan 2017 – Jan 2020 -Teach python to students aged 5+ -Conceptualize complex ideas to kids so they ate able to learn advanced coding concepts ## Education ### Bachelor of Science - BS in Computer Science Cornell University ### Horace Greeley High School ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/paul-garell --- Source: https://flows.cv/paulgarell JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/paulgarell/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-05
