# Paul Shorey > Senior Software Engineer (Node.js + React) Location: Kansas City, Kansas, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/paulshorey https://paulshorey.com ~ 13 years experience in web development and software engineering. Since 02/2021 I've been helping Spiral Financial build out banking features and marketing initiatives. During 2020, I've been hustling on getting better at full-stack development. I don't mind sticking to front-end only roles. For React and other apps, it's very beneficial to be good at Node + Bash. For automation, testing, CI deployments. It's amazing what just one person can build with a modern toolset these days! Published my own NPM modules, APIs and web apps. Built some cool proof of concepts. Developed a niche SAAS AI API product for registrars/hosting companies, but it's going to take a while to gain traction (https://besta.domains/api). Consumer app is now available too (https://besta.domains). Before, I worked at an AI startup for a couple years, in California. Learned a lot! Got exposure to Python, Golang, and PostgreSQL (which I've since used a lot). Relocating to Kansas City, where my wife is starting medical school! Now looking for a full-time remote job. I'll continue experimenting in my spare time. Coding, blogging, inventing new tools. These are my hobbies these days. As I get better at something, it gets more rewarding and fun. Still so much to learn! I used to be overwhelmed by that. Now, I'm empowered. ## Work Experience ### Senior Software Engineer @ Spiral Jan 2021 – Present | https://spiral.us Wonderful company and people that created it. Neo-bank that empowers and encourages customers to donate to any US charity as simple as setting up a transfer. The app manages user donations and lets them download an end of year tax deductions report. They're currently pivoting to develop a broader business plan. Rather than running a bank and empowering their own customers to donate, Spiral Financial will now build a giving platform! Other financial institutions will be able to integrate Spiral's donation management API and provide easy access to scheduling and managing donations to their own customers! ### Software Engineer, Founder @ besta.domains Jan 2020 – Jan 2021 | https://besta.domains Find an available domain name for your site or business. Try besta.domains. It is a Natural Language Processing AI product which generates new phrases that before only a human was be able to come up with. No more spending hours thinking of and checking a domain name one by one. It also finds the most relevant TLDs to your search (.haus, .casa, .maison, .hotel, etc). This is primarily a B2B SaaS product, data delivered via API. Similar to DomainsBot.com, but with more content, and better quality. Will help registrars sell more domains. Will help domain buyers find a good affordable domain name faster. I already used it to find several great names. ### Software Engineer @ Beyond Limits Jan 2018 – Jan 2020 | https://beyond.ai A very exciting and inspiring company creating Artificial Intelligence and automation products for the energy industry, and other industrial applications like automotive and manufacturing. They employ many brilliant minds, phDs, to solve complex problems. Predict where to drill the next well, prevent refinery bottlenecks before they happen, calculate the efficiency and productivity of an oil field, track a driver's distraction level and alert them before they fall asleep at the wheel, predict where supply ships are heading en-mass, etc... I created intricate front-end admin tools and data visualizations using plain JavaScript, Angular, and React. Dipped my toes into Python as well, because that's the standard language for data science. Learned many great lessons about leadership, teamwork, company organization, data manipulation, pitfalls of various programming languages, and most exciting of all - was fortunate enough a chance to witness the birth of a new unicorn. ;-) ### Software Engineer @ Luxul Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | https://luxul.com Moved from NYC to Utah to enjoy hang gliding, hiking and skiing. :) Eventually found this great electronics manufacturer, where I designed and developed admin dashboards to configure their WiFi routers and other networking equipment. This was great practice using React, and great inspiration for what is possible with web technologies besides just websites. Everything is run by JavaScript nowadays! Acquired by LeGrand, "TheLarge" French conglomerate and maker of light switches and electronics. ### JavaScript Engineer @ YouNow, Inc. Jan 2015 – Jan 2016 | https://younow.com A fun and truly family-like team from around the world, working in midtown Manhattan, creating an online social community beloved by millions. Compared to Youtube Live and Periscope. It's most similar to Twitch, but about daily life, not video games. Hosts broadcast themselves playing music, having conversation, doing daily chores, even sleeping. You get to be a participant in their life. It's fun and friendly. Not creepy at all, promise. :) ### Lead Web Developer @ Focus Features Jan 2009 – Jan 2014 | https://focusfeatures.com Enjoyed working here, with a great (small) team, to promote feature films and publish movie related content. Focus Features is the "art house" division of NBC Universal, and has made great films like Moonrise Kingdom, The Place Beyond the Pines, Motorcycle Diaries, Milk, Box Trolls, Hot Fuzz, Burn After Reading, and Coraline. I was responsible for publishing designs, content, games, slideshows, interviews, and generally keeping the website looking good on all browsers and devices. ### User-friendly CMS @ Unknown Jan 2008 – Jan 2009 | https://artspaces.net While in college (and high school), people asked me to build them websites. I enjoyed doing this. At the time, I thought that I hated programming. However, I decided to build a CMS program, to compete with WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal, all of which were horrible back then, so difficult to use for the client or developer. So, I made one from scratch, with an easier interface, and still a good amount of features (upload images and videos, rearrange them, contact form, etc.). I did not consider myself a Software Engineer until very recently, and for the first half of my career tried to avoid programming. But reflecting on this, I recently realized that I was a Software Engineer from the very beginning, and by choice! :) ## Education ### Bachelor of Fine Arts - BFA in Digital Communication and Media/Multimedia University of Hartford Jan 2005 – Jan 2009 ### BFA in Media Arts Hartford Art School ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/paulshorey - Website: http://www.paulshorey.com - Website: http://www.artspaces.net - Website: http://www.paulshorey.com/resume --- Source: https://flows.cv/paulshorey JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/paulshorey/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-22
