# Peter Murphy > Software Engineer II at Tango Therapeutics Location: Boston, Massachusetts, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/petermurphy Before attending Northeastern, I earned dual degrees in Biochemistry and Kinesiology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. While I was passionate about the subject matter, I soon realized that my career aspirations didn’t align with the traditional paths available to me after graduation. During my time at UMass, I worked in the IT department, gaining a foundational understanding of Mac, Windows, and Linux systems, along with problem-solving skills that have stayed with me throughout my career. However, it was my internship in the UMass Muscle Biology Lab that introduced me to coding and the power of technology in solving complex problems. Tasked with improving an outdated data processing system using MATLAB, I discovered two things: first, that I was capable of learning to code - something that had once intimidated me - and second, that I loved building systems that made others’ work easier. By the time I left the lab, I was eager to expand my knowledge in computer science. This passion led me to Northeastern’s ALIGN program, where I pursued a master’s degree in computer science. Early on, I realized how much I had yet to learn - the journey had only just begun. Throughout my studies, I built a strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, computer systems, and software development - all while strengthening my programming skills in Python, Java, C, and C++. Meanwhile, I joined a drug discovery company as part of the Informatics team, diving headfirst into the world of software development in drug discovery. This period of my career was transformative. I leveraged my biochemistry background to understand the scientific work happening around me while rapidly developing my software engineering skills. Graduating from Northeastern opened doors to the intersection of technology and drug discovery, a field where I continue to thrive. Today, I’ve grown into a technical leader, managing projects and mentoring others while continuing to build scientific software that enables discovery. My passion remains the same: helping others succeed in their work. Whether that means maintaining data ingestion pipelines, collaborating with scientists to develop data analysis tools, or supporting my team’s growth, I am proud to be in this field and excited for what’s next. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer II @ Tango Therapeutics Jan 2025 – Present | Boston, Massachusetts, United States - Took on a leadership role within the informatics team, acting as project manager during stand-up meetings, overseeing multiple projects to completion, and coordinating development efforts. - Managed a Co-Op on a project to deploy and run machine learning models on AWS EC2 for molecular property prediction and clustering analysis. - Built and maintained informatics data pipelines including developing infrastructure for training, evaluating, and using predictive machine learning models for ADMET data - Developed tools for chemistry analysis, including data visualization and compound alignment tools using RDKit. - Collaborated with internal developers and external consultants to maintain a robust CI/CD pipeline and ensure stable deployments. - Continued performing previous duties, including: working with scientists to add new assay types into our database, ensuring fast and accurate data uploads across multiple projects (through automated data ingestion pipelines and manual uploads), gathering and acting on user feedback, and updating the informatics Django application. ### Software Engineer I @ Tango Therapeutics Jan 2023 – Jan 2025 | Boston, Massachusetts, United States - Managed a team of two engineers to successfully complete a software engineering project that developed a system for parsing internal patent documents.
