# Rex Crossen > Mechanical Engineer Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/rexcrossen I am a hands on Engineer that tackles problems that have never been done before usually focused on consumer electronics ## Work Experience ### Mechanical Architect @ Crossen Consulting Jan 2024 – Present | Oakland, California, United States Mechanical Architecture for Consumer electronics Prototyping Proof of Concept NTI/NPI DFM/DFA ### Lead Mechanical Engineer @ Focal Jan 2023 – Jan 2024 | Oakland, California, United States ### Mechanical Engineering Manager @ Meta Jan 2020 – Jan 2023 | Sunnyvale, California, United States Concept Design team focused on early stage prototyping. Development vehicles, proof of concept, and NTI's. Projects and work spanned across all product verticals: Oculus (VR), Smart Glasses (Ray Ban Stories), Augmented Reality and Portal. Team was later re-org'd to focus on VR only. Successfully sourced and staffed a direct team that started with 1 up to 7 reports. Day to day duties include: mentoring/leading junior to mid-level experience engineers, project staffing, leading design reviews, project scoping, collaborating with XFN's, and road mapping projects/schedules. ### Mechanical Engineer @FRL @ Facebook Jan 2018 – Jan 2020 Designing, building and testing early stage hardware for consumer electronics. Extensive work done on Portal, Oculus and AR applications. Some of the big projects include: -First looks like/works like Portal TV prototype -Design development for key features on the Portal TV -Hall effect sensor integration for Quest 2 -Light block eye ring accessory for Quest -Various sensors integration for AR applications ### Mechanical Engineer @Project Sequioa @ Facebook Jan 2016 – Jan 2017 | Menlo Park, California, United States Came to Facebook through the Nascent Objects acquisition. Integrated the Nascent objects technology and enabled Facebook's first ever Hardware Hackathon. 30 software teams were able to design, build and demo working hardware hacks on form factor correct custom hardware. After the project was shelved we worked on projected AR experiences. ### Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineer @ Nascent Objects Jan 2014 – Jan 2016 | San Carlos Nascent Objects is platform for designing and manufacturing consumer electronics. This is accomplished with modular electrical components, 3D printing that has in-bedded electrical traces, and a custom design tool. Accomplishments: -Designed and implemented key mechanical features for electrical/mechanical integration -Extensive R&D for unique manufacturing process (patent pending) -Designed, prototyped and built electrical enclosures for the modules -Industrial and mechanical design for working demo's -Injection Molding: sourced, established vendors & traveled to China -Rigorous testing and DOE to both prove and disprove various pieces of specialized equipment -Continual development, design and manufacturing of fixtures and jigs to assist both electrical and software needs -Designed and manufactured display units and foam packing for finished works like/looks like prototypes -Professional SLA (stereolithography) experience with both in house machines and working with a number of different outside vendors -Working with both vendors and manufactures on pricing and support for products -Slip cast porcelain. Both hands on experience along with vendors in US and China ### Product Design/Development @ Self Employed Jan 2013 – Jan 2016 | San Francisco Bay Area I work with clients by helping them bring their ideas to life. Through napkin sketches, early ideation and rapid prototyping, clients see their concepts come to life as fully functional prototypes. ### Prototyper/ Mechanical Engineer @ Creator Jan 2014 – Jan 2014 | san francisco bay area Hands on engineer responsible for manufacturing, building and testing systems for a robotic hamburger machine. Prototyped a number of different sub-systems using mills, laiths, laser cutters, water jet, 3D printers and CNC machines. ### Patent Researcher @ Flogton Jan 2011 – Jan 2012 | Palo Alto, CA Flogton ("not golf" spelled backwards) is a small start-up company that aims to tweak the game of golf to make the sport less frustrating for the casual golfer. The goal is to find equipment that may not be PGA approved, but would improve the average golfer's game. My role was to research the thousands of patents for golf balls and clubs, hoping to find one that would lengthen the average drive by 25%. ### Technical Support @ Sungevity Jan 2011 – Jan 2011 | Oakland Sungevity is a solar leasing company that designs, installs and maintains home solar systems. I provided technical and customer support, troubleshooting when customers had problems. ### Mechanical Engineering Intern @ EchoFirst™ Inc. (formerly PVT Solar) Jan 2010 – Jan 2011 | Berkeley This renewable energy company is the creator of the Echo solar system, a hybrid system that generates both electrical and thermal energy. I performed stress tests on thermal panels, built micro-controllers, and purchased parts. I also designed a computer program to organize the bill of materials for each site, and organized the company's database. ## Education ### Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo ### Piedmont High school ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/rexcrossen - Portfolio: http://rexcrossen.blogspot.com --- Source: https://flows.cv/rexcrossen JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/rexcrossen/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-13
