# Rhys Johns > Engineering @ Sentra Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/rhysjohns I'm a Software Engineer who loves getting my hands dirty—whether it’s building resilient multi-region systems, sweating the details in a complex UI, debugging hardware at the signal level, or doing the glue work that keeps teams aligned and shipping. With experience across both hardware and software, I enjoy bridging the gap between them to deliver reliable, well-crafted systems. Lately, I’ve been exploring the intersection of LLMs and developer tools, finding new ways AI can make engineers more effective. I thrive in the startup world, where ownership, curiosity, and experimentation drive real progress—and I’m always looking for ways to push the limits of what’s possible. ## Work Experience ### Founding Engineer @ Sentra Jan 2026 – Present | San Francisco, California, United States ### Non Executive Director @ FitFocus Jan 2024 – Present | Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ### Technical Advisor @ FitFocus Jan 2023 – Present ### Senior Software Engineer @ Dovetail Jan 2025 – Jan 2026 | San Francisco, California, United States I work on Dovetail's AI-powered customer insights platform, shipping features across infrastructure, AI capabilities, and enterprise functionality. Recent highlights: - Built our MCP (Model Context Protocol) server from scratch, working directly with customers like Canva, Moody's, and Reuters to enable LLMs to access research insights and data. Now serving several thousand requests per week. Featured in our Dark Mode launch webinar and keynote. - Led our Data Portability system—a year-long project that eliminated manual data migrations entirely. Engineers were previously spending 2+ days per week on manual migrations. This enabled self-service cross-region moves for compliance and directly unblocked $100K+ enterprise contracts. - Helped establish AI development practices across engineering, including the gold master pattern for feature generation and multi-agent workflows that saved hours per feature and became team-wide practice. - Key player in our Auth0 migration, owning login flows, backend integration, and authentication capabilities for enterprise customers. Also helped create authentication for our outset.ai integration. - Relocated to SF to establish our enterprise engineering team (0→2), focusing on authentication, custom deployments, and technical escalation. - Built our Channels feature with RAG-based chat over user data, established observability standards, and optimized our video processing pipeline—cutting AWS costs by $21k/month. - Shipped Translation (AWS Translate)—featured in our Insight Out keynote—Multi-Region architecture (US/EU/AU), and various features across the stack from infrastructure to UI during my tensure here at Dovetail. ### Senior Software Engineer @ Dovetail Jan 2023 – Jan 2025 | Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ### Software Engineer @ Dovetail Jan 2022 – Jan 2023 | Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ### Senior Software Engineer @ ENSEK Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 | Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ### Senior Software Engineer @ Energy Action Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | Parramatta, NSW, Australia ### Senior Software Engineer @ Pooled Energy Jan 2021 – Jan 2021 | New South Wales, Australia In my role here I tackled many Engineering challenges while helping to develop the Distributed Control System that is at the heart of the Pooled Energy product, as well as the tooling to help us manage this system. This includes, but is not limited to: - Full Stack Development (.NET/Go/JavaScript) on the range of products we created - Software Architecture, on both extensions to the existing product range and on new greenfield products, particularly custom tools to manage Networked Devices and their underlying platforms. - System Administration and implementation of CI/CD pipelines for projects. - QA and debugging of hardware components related to the devices we produced - Platform Migration - This involved migrating from .NET Framework to .NET Core, bringing in industry standard IoT solutions and introducing new programming languages and tools to help us migrate from a Monolith to Microservices. - Prototyping - I prototyped many proposed ideas so we could see how they would work and determine if they were worth spending the time on - Cloud Infrastructure - Working on Azure and implementing Containers in our existing solution, as well as expanding our current tooling with Azure ### Software Engineer @ Pooled Energy Jan 2018 – Jan 2021 ### Junior Software Engineer @ Pooled Energy Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Sydney, New South Wales, Australia ### Programmer @ Freelance Game Developer Jan 2016 – Jan 2017 | Sydney, Australia Currently working on personal projects and looking for work. ### Programmer and Project Manager @ Midnight Noodles Jan 2013 – Jan 2015 ## Education ### Bachelor of Information Technology - Game Design and Development in Computer Games and Programming Skills Macquarie University ### Diploma of Digital And Interactive Games in Game Design TAFE NSW ### Certificate 4 of Games Design in Computer Games and Programming Skills TAFE NSW ### Certificate 4 of Programming in Programming TAFE NSW ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/rhysjohns --- Source: https://flows.cv/rhysjohns JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/rhysjohns/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-31
