# Rohan Malpani > Leading design - VS, VS Code, GitHub Copilot Location: Everett, Washington, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/rohanmalpani I like to make things better. I spend a lot of time designing meaningful experiences for people with a simple goal of adding value to their lives. I practice this craft with collaboration, an adaptable process, and a human-centered approach to problem solving. I strongly believe that design lays foundations for an enduring relationship between people and products. My focus has been on creating digital experiences for various people across different industry verticals like banking, retail, travel, health, public utilities, etc. In my experience as a designer thus far I have had an opportunity to play within several constraints - varying from project to project. Some with technological limitations, some that involved collaborating across time zones 10 hours apart, and some with generally challenging clients. These constraints have only pushed me in being more creative and thinking beyond the obvious. Last 5+ years of being in the fields of human-computer interaction, I have designed software and hardware products as well as worked with several clients, some of which are Fortune 500 companies. Clients / Industries (including couple of Fortune 500): Healthcare Chemical manufacturing company Retail giant of Mexico Large Beer making company A state government (Public service) Largest waste management company of North America Global Manufacturer of food products Federal Home Loan Bank University of Michigan Travel Nxt - A web based back office software for travel agencies Spice Dispenser for visually impaired people ## Work Experience ### Principal Product Designer - VS, VS Code, GitHub Copilot @ Microsoft Jan 2025 – Present | United States - Designing the future of software development across Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio — shaping the agentic development paradigm by designing for both humans and agents, and balancing user experience with agent experience. - Driving the evolution of Agentic Development Environment, by modernizing core experiences, reducing complexity, and bringing clarity and consistency across the IDE ecosystem. - Leading design for GitHub Copilot across Visual Studio and VS Code, introducing agentic chat, inline completions, debugging and diagnostic agents, .NET upgrade assistant, and ambient AI experiences that redefine developer productivity. - Serving as a subject matter expert in AI-first product design — integrating emerging capabilities (Model Context Protocol, tool-calling, custom instructions, memory) to create transparent, trustworthy, and personalized developer experiences across both IDEs, while knowing when to simplify or unship for clarity. - Building ecosystem-wide coherence across Visual Studio, VS Code, and GitHub, embedding accessibility, inclusion, responsible AI, security, and trust into every experience. - Providing creative design leadership — setting vision and raising the bar for design quality, while mentoring teams to operate with greater clarity, velocity, and ownership. - Evolving design practice for the AI era — helping teams move beyond traditional workflows to design in code, leverage AI effectively, and ship faster without compromising taste, quality, or craft. ### Senior Designer @ Microsoft Jan 2019 – Jan 2025 | Greater Seattle Area Empowering software developers and their teams to achieve more by designing state-of-the-art developer tools. My current focus is on leading the design effort on AI-assisted programming with Copilot to help increase their productivity. ### User Experience Designer @ Deloitte Digital Jan 2015 – Jan 2019 | Greater Seattle Area I designed applications and responsive websites across diverse industries—healthcare, retail, consumer, and industrial B2B. Many clients were early in their digital journey, including one I helped move from having no technology presence to launching a web platform that expanded their reach and customer base. My work spanned culturally nuanced retail experiences, modern healthcare profiles, and digital transformations for traditional industries like waste management and chemicals. I partnered closely with designers, creative directors, project managers, and client stakeholders to deliver solutions that solved complex problems, elevated brands, and created meaningful user experiences. ### Information Architect Intern @ The Understanding Group, LLC Jan 2014 – Jan 2014 | Ann Arbor, Michigan The Understanding Group is a consulting practice that makes use of Information Architecture to 'make things be good'. As an intern I was a part of multiple projects. My major contribution was towards developing site-maps for complex websites using OmniGraffle and finding structural faults in existing site maps. I had a unique opportunity to work in a novel design philosophy in which special attention is given to the foundations of any information structure. I learnt a design process that focusses not only on the user but also on the business aspect of a product. I also explored the relationship of a Product Manager (one who delivers on the business) and a UX designer (one who understands the needs of the people). ### Interaction Design Intern @ Cooper Jan 2014 – Jan 2014 As an Interaction Design Intern at Cooper, I worked on “Designing a Future Vision” for Federal Home Loan Bank, San Francisco. I was a part of the Goal-Directed design process practiced at Cooper. My contribution started from persona and scenario creation, ideation, sketching, creating a signature interaction and client presentations. My biggest takeaway was the user-centric design approach that believes in delivering delight to the people. ### Web Designer and Developer @ University of Michigan Jan 2013 – Jan 2014 | Ann Arbor Designing and developing a website for the Education Facilities department of the University of Michigan.
