# Roo Harrigan > Software for Humans Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/roo I also play indie rock. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer - Forward Deployed @ Folio Jan 2025 – Present ### Advisor @ Portrait Creative Network Jan 2025 – Present Advising on all things product/engineering ### Head of Engineering @ Portrait Creative Network Jan 2023 – Jan 2025 | San Francisco Bay Area Led product and engineering for our mobile app used by >15,000 senior members of the entertainment and media world to network across creative industries. Managed a team of 5, then built the core b2b offering from the ground up. - Portrait Pro augments private talent networks and allows creative teams to search with natural language and nuanced multi-media references to find talent matches for their project needs (currently in private beta). ### Software Engineer @ stealth mode startup Jan 2022 – Jan 2023 | San Francisco Bay Area Your classic ground-up, blank-page software engineering at a pre-seed fintech startup, ranging from terraforming initial infra to react components in the beta app, plus imagining the product, making up systems, and ultimately realizing that the thing I want to do next is build a team. ### Senior Software Engineer - Infrastructure @ Slack Jan 2020 – Jan 2022 | San Francisco, California, United States Maintained the core infrastructure services responsible for encryption key management (EKM) and international data residency. Touched so many buzzwords on this team; wrote Go and Terraform for the first time, learned about monitoring infra (prometheus), collaborated with our memcache team, tried lambdas, went from manually scaling up EC2 instances by clicking a "moar servers" button to letting Kubernetes do that for us. Spent many a late night on call with Dublin and Australia in the meantime. A highly challenging, technically rich, ultimately lonely experience; the reason I stayed so long, and the reason I left. - Top Project: Rebuilt the EKM service for the US government using our in-house platform-as-a-service ### Strategic Engineering Projects Lead - Office of the CTO @ Slack Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 | San Francisco Bay Area Identified areas for operational, technical, and cultural improvement across our 900+ person engineering org, then went out and did them, executing through a mix of solo sprints, small scrum-style teams, and coordinated large-scale efforts. Worked within the office of the CTO to help shape organizational strategy and company-wide initiatives (hiring metrics, interview and career ladder revamps, quarterly planning, hackdays). - Top project: Interrogating our internal platform-as-a-service, then orchestrating its rollout. ### Software Engineer - Platform @ Slack Jan 2017 – Jan 2019 | San Francisco, CA Led our partnership with ServiceNow to allow companies with multi-instance architecture to build Slack Apps. Worked on RPC APIs for third party developers and app directory, plus the backend interview process and entry-level mentorship program. Learned PHP/Hack, basic JavaScript, and all basic prod tools (Jenkins, GHE). Somehow was named inventor on 4 patents?! 🤷🏻‍♀️ - Top Project: Block Kit, the UI framework all apps now use to send messages in Slack. ### Associate Software Engineer - Platform @ Slack Jan 2016 – Jan 2017 | San Francisco, CA Started out writing RPC APIs, building test bots, slash commands (/remind!) and engaging with our developer community. Wrote the backend for how apps display information in Slack. Learned how to be a real software engineer here and all the production tooling that comes with it. - Top Project: Rewriting the app directory submission and review process (and migrating off Airtable!) ### Product Manager: Behavioral Health Specialty Owner @ Epic Jan 2014 – Jan 2015 | Madison, Wisconsin, United States Convinced key stakeholders that inpatient behavioral health clinicians were underserved by our software, then built and managed a team of 6 to fix it (3 engineers, 3 customer-facing). Ran a customer focus group, built the roadmap, made design mockups, and managed the software development. Learned the pre-sql database (MUMPS) and rewrote the out-of-the-box clinical reports. Partnered with the sales team for demos and government RFP. - Top Project: Group Notes for physicians. ### Project Manager @ Epic Jan 2011 – Jan 2015 | Madison, WI Worked with clinical leaders in a consulting-style, on-site software implementation role. Multi-year, $200million+ installations required building long-term relationships to guide customers through Epic setup for enterprise healthcare systems. Part project manager, part product manager, part demo eng, part customer support. Here's where I fell in love with computering, stopped applying to med schools, and started taking a night class in Java. - Top Project: Becoming an Adult, Johns Hopkins install ### Intern to Health Education @ Planned Parenthood Federation of America Jan 2010 – Jan 2010 | Shrewsbury, NJ Designed health education and outreach program materials alongside Education lead and did english-Spanish medical translations for patients in clinic. Attended press conferences to participate in local issues affecting PPFA. Final project on educating teens on breast self-exams and intro to preventative health care. ## Education ### B.
