# Rory Schadler > Building the lab of the future, accelerating scientific discovery Location: Somerville, Massachusetts, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/roryschadler I'm a software engineer with a deep interest in applying AI and other computational tools to improve drug and materials discovery. Well-designed and powerful software can accelerate scientific discovery by enabling communication and collaboration both between scientists and between humans and machines. I do my best work at that intersection of science and software, and enjoy building tools for researchers that are both powerful and easy to use. I'm currently a Senior Software Engineer at Lila Sciences (formerly Flagship Labs 97), an early-stage startup in Boston, Massachusetts. Lila's aim is to automate the scientific method and build Scientific Superintelligence, providing an AI-driven design-build-test cycle for solving humanity's biggest problems. I am a proud Dartmouth graduate, with a degree in Physics modified with Computer Science and a minor in Chinese language. I'm enthusiastic about solving problems, using my analytic and computational skills to approach a problem from many angles. I thrive most when given a hard problem and the freedom to solve it. ## Work Experience ### Senior Software Engineer @ Lila Sciences Jan 2025 – Present | Boston, Massachusetts, United States Lila is on a mission to build Scientific Superintelligence, to solve humanity's biggest problems in science. I'm building the orchestration layer and management plane for our lab, integrating lab instruments and robotics across several domains of science. The tools I'm building support human scientific development, as well as real-world, ground-truth feedback for our SSI. I work across the software organization, as well as with our scientists and engineers, to translate both human and AI scientific thought into automated procedures. ### Software Engineer II @ Lila Sciences Jan 2024 – Jan 2025 | Boston, Massachusetts, United States Driven by human innovation and scientific AI, Lila (formerly Flagship Labs 97) is creating a programmable lab and scientific superintelligence which will build a more sustainable future in the life and materials sciences. As a member of the founding software team, I built the data plane for our diverse lab instruments, as well as an initial prototype of our control plane for those instruments. ### Platform Engineer @ Zapata AI Jan 2022 – Jan 2024 | Boston, Massachusetts, United States I contributed in several capacities across the tech stack and the organization, writing full-stack web apps in TypeScript, Platform microservices in Go, and real-time machine learning applications in Python. I worked closely with researchers and engineers to build powerful, intuitive software for solving complex problems. My projects included the Orquestra Platform, an all-inclusive environment for building, testing, and deploying Generative AI-enhanced applications; and the Andretti Autosport | Zapata AI Race Analytics Command Center, an extension of the Orquestra Platform on Andretti's trackside engineering truck. ### Associate in Research @ Duke University Pratt School of Engineering Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 Continued work started at UVM on the NanoMine database, assisted in the development of a semi-structured semantic database for nanocomposite materials. Projects included further work on semantic data manipulation and inference, as well as helping transition the website to a containerized application. ### Carpenter, Stage Electrician, and Show Technician @ Dartmouth Theater Department Jan 2017 – Jan 2021 | Hanover, New Hampshire I assisted in the design, construction, and installation of sets; I installed and focused lights; I operated sound and light boards during performances; and I managed teams of other students in doing the same. ### Software Engineer @ University of Vermont Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 | Burlington, Vermont, United States I helped in the development of an online database for semi-structured semantic data on nanocomposite materials, NanoMine. My work included data sanitization, semantic data manipulation, and the database’s query capability. I built several tools for the automatic conversion and retrieval of data provided by publications. ### Carpenter, Stagehand @ Reagle Music Theatre Jan 2016 – Jan 2018 | Waltham, MA Over three years, I built and installed sets with a team of carpenters, and worked as a stagehand on 7 shows. ### Trail Crew @ Appalachian Mountain Club Jan 2014 – Jan 2016 | Massachusetts and New Hampshire I built and maintained trails on the Appalachian Trail. I worked with a team to accomplish projects set by our crew leaders, including above the tree line. ## Education ### Bachelor of Arts - BA in cum Laude, Physics and Computer Science, Minor in Chinese Dartmouth College ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/roryschadler - GitHub: https://github.com/roryschadler - Portfolio: https://www.roryschadler.me --- Source: https://flows.cv/roryschadler JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/roryschadler/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-31
