Muscular hydrostats (e.g. octopus arms and elephant trunks) are almost entirely composed of muscle and connective tissue . We observed the elephant's trunk grabbing behavior. Based on the research done by our lab, we found a series of effective strategies used by elephant trunk for sweeping, which may be beneficial for future engineering applications. Researchers have been inspired by biology to design and build soft robots. With a soft structure and redundant degrees of freedom, these robots can be used for delicate tasks in cluttered and/or unstructured environments. In this project, we are trying to make conceptual design of soft robotics inspired by elephant trunk, and investigate their kinematic and dynamic properties. We hope this research not only uncovers the manipulation mechanism of the elephant trunk, but generates new ideas for designing dexterous and powerful soft grippers. ### BME Design Shop Instructor, Shop Hand @ The Wallace H.
