# Sergey Numerov > Staff Software Engineer at Fivetran Location: Walnut Creek, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/sergeynumerov About As a Software Engineer with years of experience, I have used very different technologies, contributed to diverse domains and played different roles in my organizations. From embedded firmware, to Cloud and to User Experience/Front End, I have grown and used my technical skills to help our Customers solve Real World problems and meet Real World needs. In addition to being technical, I often happily engaged directly with Customers and inter-disciplinary teams in order arrive at a shared vision as well as to answer various questions and resolve issues. Results of that work can be found from the smart devices on electric poles that run the firmware I wrote, to UI available on the Web and to multiple services and applications powering products and solutions. In the Fall of 2020 I left the fun and challenging position that I had at the time in order to pivot my career in the direction of Machine Learning and Data Science. The field offers a strong opportunity to focus on what I do best and what matters the most to me professionally: use Data to help my Organization and our Customers. In that field I am able to employ cutting edge algorithms and technologies as well as keep developing my already solid Software Engineering skills. I am now in the final stages of completing an intensive hands-on Machine Learning study program offered through the University of San Diego. The centerpiece of this program is the Capstone Project, which in my case is a Machine Learning enabled weather forecaster. I am actively looking for an challenging position as a Machine Learning Engineer in order to put my ML skills into practice as well as leverage the rich Engineering background that I have. ## Work Experience ### Staff Software Engineer @ Fivetran Jan 2022 – Present | Oakland, California, United States Research and drive to production new features and solutions using cutting edge technologies, with emphasis on AI. ### Senior Machine Learning Engineer @ Fivetran Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | Oakland, California, United States Leveraging ML to help organizations control their data without complex engineering. ### Student @ UC San Diego Extension Jan 2021 – Jan 2021 Rigorous mentored theoretical study in Machine Learning, hands on mini-projects and a large Capstone Project as follows: ● Weather Forecaster trained on multiple years of historic hourly Weather data from multiple locations ● Relies on multiple weather models that use different Algorithms such as Deep Learning and Linear Regression. Models include chronological features from the geographic location where weather is being forecast and geographic locations adjacent to it ● Provides a Web UI that shows both the forecast and model performance metrics ● Centred around a Data, Model and Deployment Pipeline to guarantee robustness and repeatability ● Technologies: Python, TensorFlow, Keras, Scikit-Learn, Pandas, Docker and AWS ● Github: https://github.com/sergeypine/WeatherLearner ### Senior Software Engineer @ ThousandEyes Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 | San Francisco Bay Area Worked on micro services and the User-facing Web application that together provide state of the art global Internet health monitoring. Here I expanded my scope from purely Backend to Full Stack development and had a lot of fun, working with diverse technologies and on functionality across our ecosystem. One of most rewarding parts was working with our excellent Product Management to translate Customer requirements to engineering work. Grew my Cloud technology knowledge with Kubernetes, Mongo DB and Grafana/Prometheus; also (after holding out all this time) developed user facing functionality with Front End Java Script (with Vue). In addition to that, did some work on our Cloud Agent Virtual Appliance, thus reaching into every level of the product. By the end of my journey with ThousandEyes, I can confidently say that I know all the pieces that it takes to build a good ecosystem of Cloud Services, as well as run it reliably and provide high quality monitoring and instrumentation for it. ### Senior Software Engineer @ Autodesk Jan 2017 – Jan 2019 | San Francisco Bay Area Built critical cloud scalable services that leveraged various AWS components, with focus on streaming and data pipelines. Was the go to engineer in situations when questions arose or something went wrong. In that process shone the light into the nooks and crannies of various aspects of AWS implementations, from behaviour at high loads to performance intricacies. Designed and provided multi-lingual client SDKs to facilitate access to these services by using a Java implementation as the shared engine and hosting it on an internal "server" which exposed multi-lingual stubs. Tackled several tricky distributed computing challenges. One of the most rewarding parts of my Autodesk experience was helping our internal Customers with adapting, tuning and deep troubleshooting of the data streaming Cloud services which I played key part in developing. Due to the critical nature of the services we needed to avoid loss of data at all costs-- a task which, I'm proud to say, we succeeded in, while having overwhelmingly positive and constructive interactions with all the parties involved. ### Senior Developer @ Librato, Inc. Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | San Francisco Bay Area As part of the Data Team in a startup-like environment, working on a highly scalable , cloud based solution for real time metric and alert aggregation and monitoring. Distributed stream and time series data processing utilizing Kafka, Zookeeper, Cassandra, Memcached and other cloud technologies, both open source and in-house. It is exciting to be contributing to to the various elements of the rich micro service-based ecosystem containing not only Java-based but also C++, Go and Ruby-based components interacting seamlessly in real time via RESTful and RPC-like mechanisms. ### Software Engineer @ Neustar, Inc. Jan 2015 – Jan 2017 | San Francisco, CA I made the switch to this great new Company as I became more and more interested in Data-related technologies, including Big Data. While remaining a primarily back end Java engineer I gained exposure to data analysis and processing using RedShift, Hadoop/Hive and PostgreSQL. Systems and applications I worked on are directly related to the real world, as Neustar is a data analytics company, which made the position especially rewarding. Worked on services ingesting and transcoding large amounts of online event data from diverse sources in a distributed fashion, including taking primary responsibility for some, from the product definition to the implementation stages. Java stack with heavy use of Spring framework and significant reliance on AWS technologies such as S3, SQS, SNS and lambda. ### Software Project Engineer @ S&C Electric Company Jan 2008 – Jan 2014 | Alameda, California In this role I took on additional responsibilities as an architect and team lead. I also moved into PC and cloud software development in C#/.NET/Java while keeping firm footing in embedded firmware. My projects included: circuit modeling, analysis and configuration application, digital testing and emulation solution for field device installations as well as a Web-based data acquisition and management application. All of those rely heavily on communications and are time sensitive. It is at this intersection between rich desktop/web applications and state of the art distributed embedded systems that I found myself most challenged and fulfilled. My final project at S&C involved in-field data communication and transformation components for a cloud-based device management system, primarily Java EE-based with interoperability with .NET. There I needed to grapple with unreliable communications, making optimal use of limited bandwidth and normalizing data from diverse remote controllers to a unified model to be ultimately used for UI. ### Software Engineer @ S&C Electric Company Jan 2002 – Jan 2008 | Alameda, California In this role I created various firmware for our grid automation products. I ported the award winning distributed automation solution to a new platform, as well as the code for our Capacitor Control product. I also developed a comprehensive logging library, a SEEPROM storage manager and a Compact Flash storage manager. All of that was done in C and targeted Coldfire. All the firmware work I did required tight coordination with hardware and PC Control and Management software (which I also took part in developing). I also played a crucial role in bringing up our RTOS. ## Education ### B.A in Computer Science University of California, Berkeley ### Machine Learning (Andy Ng course) Stanford University ### Machine Learning UC San Diego Extended Studies ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/sergey-numerov-3bb8b25 --- Source: https://flows.cv/sergeynumerov JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/sergeynumerov/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-12
