I offer independent studies in Software Engineering for motivated students with little to no background in programming.
Can you dream it? You can build it! This is a hands-on approach to learning the tenets of software development by creating your own website application from scratch. Throughout the course we will cover myriad technologies involved in building the web, including command-line interface, git, Github, html, css, introductory Javascript, and React. This course emphasizes an “engineering is for everyone” attitude and considers the diversity of exposure to programmatic thinking and/or technology students may bring. We will discuss some of the barriers to the field of software engineering, the opportunities that software affords in our daily lives, and the importance of accessibility in our applications. Students should arrive prepared to learn and hone skills through hands-on writing code with a collaborative and community-oriented approach. Students will work through self-paced tutorials designed around their final project.
