Previously, I used OpenCV to create a unique image processing algorithm that was initially meant for visually impaired people's assistive smart glasses. For real-time applications, the baseline implementation's 60-second processing latency per frame was unacceptable. I created and put into practice a parallel parsing and pixel fragmentation algorithm that slashed inference latency to 0.1 seconds per frame, a 600x speedup. This required memory-efficient clustering, multiprocessing techniques adapted to edge compute constraints, and OpenCV pipeline optimisation. I was motivated by that experience to develop production-grade AI systems that outperform research in practical applications.
