# Soumyaraj Bose > Software Engineer, Data Platform at GRAIL Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/soumyaraj I love to and work on anything and everything data! But 10 years ago, I started off my road to today as a Chemical Engineer. My obsession with numerical methods and computation led me to a research assistantship at ICT Mumbai and a paper in renewable energy technologies. 4 years ago, I moved a step further and started a Master's in Computational Science from UC San Diego. In my time here, I learnt how to solve ODEs and PDEs, how to model and solve problems using machine learning and deep learning and, how to automate systems to attain an objective using reinforcement learning. At the peak of the pandemic in 2020, I joined Italic as a Software Engineer on the basis of my skills at software development that I had honed over the previous ten years. I enjoyed my time developing features on Italic's storefront webiste but I could not pass up the chance when a spot opened up on their Analytics team in February 2021. For the past 1.5 years, I have moving, cleaning, aggregating and reporting data to every internal team at Italic. I work closely with engineers to make sure data is available and consistent. I work closely with business teams to make sure they know how to and use data for their day-to-day decision making. In short, I own the data and BI pipeline and infrastructure at Italic from end to end. Now, I am looking out for more places where I can help their teams do the same! If you're interested, please feel free to leave a message or email me directly at soumyarajbo@gmail.com ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer, Data Platform @ GRAIL Jan 2023 – Present | Menlo Park, California, United States ### Data Engineer @ Italic Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | San Francisco Bay Area Fields explored: E-commerce functions and metrics, Business Intelligence, Data Analytics, Database Management, Data Infrastructure, ETL Over the course of my time working with the curious, efficient and, in general, lovely minds at Italic, I • designed and developed an entire data to reporting pipeline from scratch • migrated our previous data infrastructure in BigQuery to Redshift • set up and optimized ETL through Fivetran and Stitch to sync data from Italic’s DB in RDS to Redshift • set up, developed on and maintained a GitHub repo of SQL queries (models) to create and update tables to aggregate ETL data in Redshift based on DBT’s workflow • created and developed scripts to QA data in Redshift (ETL and aggregate data) for inconsistencies and incompleteness and backfill correct data into DB from third party API such as Stripe • created data sources and dashboards to power BI reporting for the entire Italic team on Tableau and Mode, based on schema designed jointly with all business teams • monitored performance and operating parameters of the entire data infrastructure (RDS -> Fivetran -> Redshift) and maintained consistent end-to-end documentation ### Associate Software Engineer @ Italic Jan 2020 – Jan 2021 Skills developed: Web development using React and node.js, NoSQL database (MongoDB) management, Managing infrastructure for web development, testing and deployment • Developed and tested features on the Italic storefront database in node.js and React • Setup servers on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for both staging and production website • Migrated the GCP hosted NoSQL DB (MongoDB) to external cloud hosted (MongoDB Atlas) • Monitored performance and optimized operating parameters for the DB on Atlas ### Research Intern @ University of California San Diego Jan 2019 – Jan 2021 | La Jolla, California Fields explored: Robotics, Reinforcement Learning, Control Systems, Computer Vision Skills developed: Software Development using Python, Mathematical modelling for Robotics, Robot Experimentation software (V-REP), Scientific Computing and Data Analysis using Python As part of a five-member team working to enable automation of the da Vinci surgical robot, I • Developed OpenAI Gym environments for reinforcement learning with the goal to train the agent/model of the da Vinci surgical robot arm to learn optimal policies (sets of actions) in order to interact with simulated body tissue and perform complicated surgical tasks, such as sewing a wound • Developed the dynamic model of the da Vinci arm in Gym using the V-REP software environment with scripts in Python and Lua to automate the model to successfully perform simple tasks such as reach a randomly selected goal position • Developed another Gym environment to automate the endoscopic camera on the da Vinci to center objects in its frame using visual feed tracked with OpenCV (also known as visual servoing) ### Graduate Teaching Assistant @ University of California San Diego Jan 2018 – Jan 2020 | La Jolla, California Fields explored: Multivariate Calculus, Mathematical Education Skills developed: Teaching undergraduate mathematics, Public Speaking As a TA for Multivariate (of two or more variables) Calculus, I • Held discussion (or problem-solving) sessions and consulting hours • Periodically evaluated the learning progress of students via quizzes and examinations • Individually guided 60 - 80 students and, with my co-TAs, evaluated the performance of over 150 undergraduate students enrolled in the course for six continuous quarters of study ### Research Assistant @ Institute Of Chemical Technology Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Mumbai Area, India Fields explored: Solar Energy, Computational Mathematics Skills developed: Mathematical Modelling in Python, Energy Project Modelling using SAM, Literature Review, Technical Report/Paper Writing, Data Analysis With Dr. Dalvi, I • developed the mathematical model of a uniflow steam engine that can serve to replace steam turbines in the power blocks of CSP plants and, generate usable power economically • developed a numerical solver in Python to solve the ODE (ordinary differential equation) associated with the math model • used data from Excel-based Steam Tables and Python scripts to simulate the model’s performance under different operating parameters and conditions • investigated the technical as well as economic aspects of the CSP market and collected significant historical data on the development of projects across the year ### Summer Trainee @ Aditya Birla Group Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 | Mumbai Area, India Fields explored: Cement Sciences, Material Science Skills developed: Hands-on laboratory experimentation, Cement Chemistry Analysis, Literature Review, Report Writing I worked as an intern in the Cement Sciences R&D division at ABSTC studying the chemistry of Grey Portland Cement clinkers with a focus on determining factors that reduce the structural strength of cement paste (with water). As part of the investigation, I: • conducted procedures to prepare samples for the purpose of macroscopic (Wet chemistry) as well as microscopic scale (SEM, X-ray analyses) studies on the chemistry of cement clinkers • carried out Isothermal calorimetry tests on ground clinker or cement mix (clinker and gypsum) and its mixtures with additives to study the impact on cement hydration ## Education ### Master of Science - MS in Computational Science, Mathematics & Engineering UC San Diego ### Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (Goa Campus) ### Hiranandani Foundation School (Thane) ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/soumyaraj-bose-987068b3 - Website: https://github.com/wordplayer --- Source: https://flows.cv/soumyaraj JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/soumyaraj/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-01
