# Steven Tenaglia > I design and build software solutions for small businesses. Location: Greater Boston, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/steventenaglia My interdisciplinary background started at age 8 when I decided I wanted to be a veterinarian. As I grew older, I shifted into human medicine, likely because it was more familiar since my father was a cardiologist. During college I became infatuated with neuroscience and received a BS in Neuroscience including pre-medical courses and biochemistry through the 500 level. Junior year, when it was time to complete Medical School applications, I realized I loved learning the science but was not interested in working as a physician, and decided to become a software engineer instead. Over the next two years I completed a BA in Computer Science and a Minor in Math in addition to the BS in Neuroscience, graduating summa cum laude as a Commonwealth Honors Scholar With Greatest Distinction and receiving the Undergraduate Achievement Award in Interdisciplinary Study from the Department of Computer Science. During this time I discovered Computational Neuroscience and performed a summer fellowship at the Carnegie Mellon-University of Pittsburgh Program in Neural Computation and after graduating from undergrad started a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. There I developed machine learning and artificial intelligence models to simulate how neurons in the basal ganglia implement operant conditioning behavior. The academic skills I learned were invaluable, but ultimately I decided I needed a profession that had a larger focus on directly helping people and left with a Masters Degree to pursue software engineering. After working with companies big and small in industries ranging from government to healthcare to SMB marketing and being exposed to many different business and software engineering philosophies, I now work independently with small business communities to help solve problems with creative software solutions. It supports appointment scheduling, appointment notes, and patient billing with Stripe. It uses state-of-the-art security features including Passkey authentication, strict data access policies at both the application and data layers, and multiple levels of encryption. There is also an integrated Project Management dashboard where users can direct the development of the platform by funding features or tasks that are valuable to them. The first feature I worked on was health insurance claims management, looking into both direct integrations with health insurance companies like Harvard Pilgrim Health Plan and clearinghouse services such as Availity, Office Ally, claim.MD and Eligible. After evaluating the competitive landscape and the costs of implementing health insurance claims management for a bootstrapped solo founder, I decided that Sessions Health, a new Practice Management System for Mental Health providers, had implemented the same features, technology, and partners as Provider Panacea with the addition of health insurance claims management, (expensive) compliance certifications, and robust customer support systems and therefore was in a better position to succeed than Provider Panacea. I decided in June 2025 to stop working on Provider Panacea, and recommend any mental health providers who are seeking software solutions to explore Sessions at https://www.sessionshealth.com ### Senior Software Engineer @ Experity Jan 2022 – Jan 2023 * Built new Support Portal application using Next.js, Express.js, and Cypress * Oversaw successful database normalization project, contributing both individually and collaboratively * Resolved Redis overflow which was causing ongoing data loss and increased maintenance costs * Extensive mentorship of Agile, code quality, automated testing, database, and performance best practices ### Backend Software Engineer @ KeyMe Locksmiths Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 - Provide maintenance and support for payment systems in Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL - Collaborated with Frontend team to design and implement a scalable and thread-safe solution for automatically assigning external payment identifiers to kiosks during manufacturing - Upgraded Ruby on Rails server software version ### Software Engineer @ Privy Jan 2018 – Jan 2021 * Extensive experience working with Sidekiq jobs to asynchronously send email/text messages, process third-party webhooks and interact with third-party APIs, including solving challenges involving concurrency, idempotency, atomicity, scalability and reliability * Developed opt-in/out management system for the new text message marketing platform * Implemented new email segments involving order delivery status and previous email engagement * Improved the runtime of a data migration involving PostgreSQL and MongoDB from months to days using query optimization and parallelization * Regularly mentored junior engineers ### Junior Software Engineer @ ViewPoint Government Solutions Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Greater Boston Area Responsible for porting Node/Express backend to Ruby on Rails and development of a new public-facing web application in Ember.js. ### Jr Full-Stack Web Developer @ Launch Academy, Inc Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | Greater Boston Area Immersive Full-Stack Web Development Bootcamp using Ruby on Rails, React.js, Agile methodologies, and Test-Driven Development.
