# Tanner Thompson > Data SWE @ Google Maps - Walking/Biking/Transit Advocate Location: New York City Metropolitan Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/tannerthompson I work on things that 1) get people out of cars and 2) get cars out of cities. If you can figure out what city is in my header photo, I will accept your connection request and/or buy you a burrito 🌯 Otherwise, I only add people I know. If you are interested in chatting with me about Google, send me a connection request and include a message, and I will respond! I like data, geography, math, ML, cities, and alternative transportation. I value working with ethical, empathetic, smart, communicative, kind people. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Google Jan 2019 – Present | New York, New York I work on cool ways to aggregate and use user transportation data in Google Maps. The team I'm on creates the semantic location history data you see in Timeline in Google Maps. My job is to transform & aggregate that data - especially data about public transit, biking, and walking - and create value for Maps users. When the COVID pandemic hit, I helped build a prototype model to predict crowdedness on transit vehicles. After that model was launched, I took ownership of the project and rebuilt it into a robust, fully machine-learned model. The launch of that model was featured in the Google Keyword blog post below. I've also worked on a few internal projects related to measuring real-world transportation volumes across the world. Currently I'm working on improving the in-station walking time estimates that Maps shows users in transit directions. ### Data Scientist @ Zenabi Data Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 | Westport, CT Zenabi was a young data science and software consulting company. I supported three different projects as a data scientist. One is for a global nonprofit org, where I maintained a model that predicted the likelihood that prospective members will join. I was responsible for this model from end to end - from feature engineering to machine learning to deployment and delivery via API. I also supported other team members on this project in efforts involving email marketing and website content recommendation engines. The second was for the NYC subway. I prototyped a model that predicts delays on individual lines with minute-level precision. I spearheaded the project and, with two coworkers, pitched our solution to a panel of MTA management and VCs. The third was for a company that provides loans for small and medium-sized businesses. As the lead and only data scientist on the project, I provided expertise and analysis and began the process of moving their existing approval model from DataRobot to a custom, Zenabi-hosted solution. ### Data Engineer @ Lucid Jan 2018 – Jan 2018 | South Jordan I implemented parts of an in-house user event tracking system for Lucidchart in both TypeScript and Scala. I also built ETL pipelines using Python, Scala, and SQL to provide data for and support the efforts of the data scientists. ### Software Engineer @ Lucid Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | South Jordan, UT As a member of the Diagram Automation team, I maintained Lucidchart's CSV import feature. I also supported other diagram auto-creation and auto-layout features, such as AWS Import and ERD Import. I worked on a scrum team in two-week sprints, participated in frequent code reviews, and wrote unit tests. I wrote mostly TypeScript (including some Angular) and a little Scala. ### Strategy and Geospatial Analysis Intern @ People's Utah Bancorp Jan 2016 – Jan 2016 | American Fork, UT I used Python to aggregate and clean geographic data about consumers, businesses, and competing branches. I then used regression to isolate key metrics for predicting success of future branch locations. ### Student Leader and Curriculum Developer @ BYU Mathematics Department Jan 2015 – Jan 2016 | Provo, UT I led the Student Advisory Council for ACME. In this capacity, I led weekly student committee meetings where we planned social and career-building activities for the ACME students. I also contributed to the ACME curriculum by writing and reviewing Python lessons for the ACME lab classes. ### Earth Science Research Intern @ NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Jan 2016 – Jan 2016 | Irvine, CA As a participant in NASA's Student Airborne Research Program, I researched mathematical approaches to earth systems science. In particular, my research focused on distinguishing different species of kelp in airborne and satellite imagery using algorithmic techniques. My preliminary research was successful in accomplishing this, and I was awarded a NASA scholarship to attend the AGU annual meeting in San Francisco and present my research. ### Software Engineering Intern @ Lucid Software Inc. Jan 2016 – Jan 2016 | South Jordan, UT I worked on both the engineering and the analytics sides of the Growth team. On the engineering side, I designed and implemented a multi-armed bandit algorithm in the company's Scala code base. On the analytics side, I analyzed the results of the bandit algorithm and wrote a blog post about it (see below). I also cleaned, processed, and analyzed usage data from LucidChart using Python. ### Regional Manager/Translator @ SolidPartners, Inc. Jan 2016 – Jan 2016 | Hannover, Germany I traveled to Germany with the SolidPartners team and worked the booth at the 2016 Hannover Messe, the largest industrial trade fair in the world. At the fair, I represented the company and its software products and translated between English and German as often as needed. After the fair, I visited with company contacts throughout Germany, doing software demos with my coworker. In addition, I coordinated and purchased intercontinental as well as European travel and accommodations for the team, and simply acted as the point man for all things German. ### Teacher's Assistant @ BYU Physics Deparment Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 | Provo, Utah I assisted Dr. Brandon Campbell with Physics 220: Electricity and Magnetism. ### Construction Design Intern @ Herman & Kittle Properties, Inc. Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 | Indianapolis, Indiana I pieced together several sets of data about the company's subcontractors from outdated databases and prepared the data for a new database. I used lots of Excel, including VBA. I also did other projects involving data manipulation and visualization in Excel. ## Education ### Fellow in Walking College America Walks Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 ### BS in Magna Cum Laude, Applied and Computational Mathematics Brigham Young University Jan 2011 – Jan 2017 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/tanner-thompson-42a236106 --- Source: https://flows.cv/tannerthompson JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/tannerthompson/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-23
