# Thanoshi Balasuriya > B.S. in Computer Science and Cognitive Psychology Location: Greater Boston, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/thanoshi Hardworking and detail-oriented programmer and new graduate, with a B.S. in Computer Science and Cognitive Psychology from Northeastern University. By combining the fields of Computer Science and Cognitive Psychology, I hope to create technology that actually helps and is accessible to people. At this point, I’m interested mainly in back-end software development, using programming languages such as Java, Python, and TypeScript. However, I am currently developing my skills in other languages as well, such as C++, JavaScript, and HTML. As a Northeastern student, I had the opportunity to co-op (work full-time at a company for 5/6 months) twice: at Spotify from July 2021 to December 2021, and at RECUR from July 2022 to November 2022. I worked full-time at each of these companies during the duration of my co-op and was treated as a regular member of each team, giving me lots of real world experience, as well as ways to improve my skills. As a student of Computer Science, I was able to hone my skills in taking real world problems and implementing creative solutions into engineering designs and thorough code. Furthermore, I have been fortunate to have a multitude of experience working in teams and learning the importance of research, documentation, and testing in the design process. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer Co-op @ RECUR Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 | Boston, Massachusetts, United States ➢ Produced and tested code in TypeScript as part of the Order Management team, allowing users to securely and seamlessly buy, trade, or sell NFTs. ➢ Managed the designing and editing of email templates using MJML for emails that were sent directly to users, communicating personalized order status. ➢ Enhanced REST APIs and backend systems using serverless computing hosted on AWS to handle large amounts of data during product drops. ### Undergraduate Tutor (CS 2500) @ Khoury College of Computer Sciences Jan 2020 – Jan 2022 CS 2500: Fundamentals of Computer Science I Hold office hours and attend labs to ensure that students fully understand the material and have all their questions answered. ### Backend Engineer Co-op @ Spotify Jan 2021 – Jan 2021 | Boston, Massachusetts, United States ➢ Developed code in Java for various experiments to increase the freshness of and expand the Seed Mix backend service, including logic that was rolled out and increased Seed Mix consumption by 2%. ➢ Implemented unit tests for the Seed Mix backend service, increasing line coverage by 10%. ➢ Built an entire backend service from scratch to store a user’s settings specific to each playlist. ### Affectiva EMPath 2020 Trainee @ Affectiva Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 Phase 1: Completed Affectiva's EMPath 2020 Student Artificial Intelligence Education Program ➢ learned about affective computing, emotional AI, Python, and machine learning through resources provided by Affectiva. Also included networking opportunities with students across the globe, as well as with mentors within Affectiva. Phase 2: Created an innovative Makeathon project, empatient (see Accomplishments: Projects for more details), related to telehealth. ### Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (CS 18000) @ Purdue Computer Science Jan 2019 – Jan 2019 | Purdue University CS 18000: Problem Solving and Object-Oriented Programming Provide support to students in laboratory and aid in their understanding of the basics of Java programming and how to translate solutions into code. ### Captain @ Purdue Taal Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 Was a member of the a cappella team, Purdue Taal, during my time at Purdue University (August 2017 - October 2019) Recorded a studio album called Heartbeat (linked below) In 2018, I became a captain, and in that role, I: Fostered a welcoming, understanding atmosphere, thus allowing for the team to reach best performance and sound potential. Organized the team and related logistics to increase productivity within practice. Engaged with the Purdue community to spread music and appreciation of cultural diversity. ### Computer Engineering Student @ Purdue University College of Engineering Jan 2017 – Jan 2019 | West Lafayette, Indiana ### Honors Engineering Student @ Purdue University College of Engineering Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Purdue University Worked in teams to solve various engineering problems and develop practical solutions. Projects included programming modeling simulations, designing prototypes, and building robots. Involved detailed documentation of all processes. See Accomplishments: Projects for more details on specific projects.
