Effective in applying research and analytics results to product innovations and communicating specialized information to a general audience. Published researcher of Internet user behavior, applying statistical and social network analysis techniques in industry and academic settings. Currently part of the software engineering team @ Transform. Former Data Scientist & Software Engineering Lead @ Facebook. Built Facebook's core analytics logging framework and founded the Logging Infra engineering team. ## Work Experience ### Staff Software Engineer @ dbt Labs Jan 2023 – Present Led overall architecture and design for integrating MetricFlow into dbt's cloud product offering, charting a path to making MetricFlow the engine behind dbt's semantic layer within 6 months of the Transform acquisition. Removed MetricFlow's reliance on embedded database connections to enable integration with dbt's query runtimes. Collaborated with a small team to build and ship dbt's cost management product, from architecture and design through implementation and deployment. Designed and built the data transformation and metric computation logic powering the core product experience. ### Software Engineer @ Transform Jan 2021 – Jan 2023 Partnered with Transform's technical co-founder to design, build, and deploy MetricFlow, the core technology powering Transform's semantic layer and metric query product. Established the technical roadmap for MetricFlow based on direct customer engagement and collaboration with product leads. Onboarded additional team members into the codebase and coordinated our efforts to accelerate feature delivery. Led architecture and design and engaged directly with implementation and code review of most major features. ### Lead Software Engineer @ Facebook Jan 2017 – Jan 2021 Developed long term vision and technical and architectural direction for the Logging Infrastructure team. Served as the team's external privacy lead, working to build alignment across multiple teams for a critical privacy initiative. Built core components for privacy and automated data deletion systems while providing technical direction across the team’s projects via design and code review. ### Software Engineering Manager @ Facebook Jan 2015 – Jan 2017 Managed a team of 8 engineers spanning 3 projects. Developed 2 junior engineers into successful project leads. Oversaw multiple internal projects which delivered substantive improvements, including a 98% reduction in preventable user errors. ### Software Engineer @ Facebook Jan 2012 – Jan 2015 Designed and built Facebook's core analytics data logging framework. Designed and implemented a mobile client event detection and logging framework for measuring time spent on Facebook's iOS properties. Built critical components of a system for anonymizing user identifiable information in Facebook's Data Warehouse and coordinated the initial rollout and anonymization effort. ### Data Scientist @ Facebook Jan 2008 – Jan 2012 As a Data Scientist at Facebook, I studied diffusion, influence, presentation of self, community formation, the relationship between network structure and participation, and user behavior around privacy controls and content sharing. These analyses shed light on patterns of site usage and helped guide product decisions. ### Contract Researcher @ Microsoft Jan 2006 – Jan 2007 Coordinated collaborative effort to understand the connection between social relationships and user participation in blogs and online social media sites. Applied innovative data management and analysis approaches to studying emerging technologies for social interaction. Defined measures for social relationships, which generated insights into user behavior Organized the workshop on studying interaction in online communities at the Third Conference on Communities and Technologies at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan ### Intern @ Microsoft Jan 2005 – Jan 2005 Delivered research project comparing Chinese and non-Chinese user behavior in a blogging system. Identified key differences in behavior leading to expansion of Chinese user base. Produced the final publication copy of the paper and presented the results. ### Intern @ Canon Inc. Jan 2002 – Jan 2002 | Tokyo, Japan Conducted market analysis targeted at potential product development in Internet Business Development Division in Canon's Tokyo office. Analyzed risks and benefits of expansion into the ASP market, a new area of business, while working as an Intern at Fastnet's Tokyo office. Fastnet is a joint subsidiary of Canon and NTT. ## Education ### BA in Chemistry, Asian Studies Cornell University ### PhD in Sociology Cornell University ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/lento --- Source: https://flows.cv/thomaslento JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/thomaslento/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-12
