# Thomas Wei > UX and Interaction Design @ Fulfil | MHCI CMU ’23 Location: Cupertino, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/thomaswei I am an avid problem solver, passionate about designing products and services at the intersection of hardware and software. I have a Masters of Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelors in Industrial Design and Informatics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. You can find my Website and Portfolio here: https://www.thomaswei-design.io/ ## Work Experience ### Senior UX/Interaction Designer @ Fulfil Jan 2026 – Present ### UX/Interaction Designer @ Fulfil Jan 2023 – Jan 2026 | Mountain View, CA I design software and lead research initiatives to expand the capabilities of Fulfil's internal tooling, as well as improve their reliability and precision. I empower Fulfil's developers and engineers, as well as any of Fulfil's partners, with the situational awareness they need to efficiently test, iterate, monitor, and interact with the automation in Fulfil's complex human-machine ecosystem. I often lead initial discovery by working with stakeholders and users (sometimes both partner and internal teams) to define project scope, roadmap, uncover unmet needs, and success metrics. I build, test, and iterate alongside them and ensure that there is alignment between all relevant parties. I also work closely with the developers and support them in gathering feedback, and monitoring for avenues of improvement. A prominent of this example being the Induction UX, a critical human touchpoint in Fulfil's automation ecosystem. I have elevated the operator experience by shipping multiple new workflows related to operator error handling and quality control while balancing tradeoffs to operator throughput. This has lead to fewer errors downstream, meaning higher machine availability and improved ability to fulfill customer orders. I have also taken the initiative to learn and contribute new features, tests, and workflows to Fulfil's front-end repository using AI code tools (with support from other developers on the team). I have been able to broaden my range of methods to experiment with new ideas and features. Critically, incorporating AI code tools into my process has provided me with deeper insight into how developers modeled Fulfil's systems and what their constraints are. This has in turn exponentially improved my ability to collaborate with developers as I have been able to anticipate and balance optimal UX and cost of implementation. ### Product Designer (MHCI Capstone) @ Meta Jan 2023 – Jan 2023 | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States - Crafted the heuristics, design principles, and interactions for a multi-modal, LLM-powered conversational agent to support engineers across Meta’s Hyperscale Data Centers; improving infrastructure up-time and enabling long-term scalability. - Conducted interviews, design activities, and collaborative sessions with SMEs from Meta and across various analogous domains; synthesized findings to understand contextual challenges and user workflows, build user empathy, and triangulate high-impact design opportunities. - Designed user studies, defined testing metrics, and rapidly iterated upon concepts ranging from AR headsets to policy interventions, and CUIs. - Presented the potential design impact and value to clients, users, and stakeholders; created a comprehensive report documenting our findings and process for future reference. ### Design Lead @ Morphing Matter Lab @ CMU Jan 2023 – Jan 2023 | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States - Identified and tackled opportunities to utilize 4D printing and the Shape Memory Effect of 3D printing for on-site self-assembly within applications like wind turbines and facade structures to address sustainability challenges during transport, assembly, and end-of-life. - Prototyped a wind turbine blade, and developed storyboards, renders, and other visualizations to illustrate the value and story of the project to both internal and external members. - Winner of “Most Innovative Research Idea” - Scott Institute Of Energy Research Poster Competition ### Design Consultant @ Visionaire Products, Inc. Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 - Developed a novel hand-held medical device for the diagnostics of ocular fluid to minimize patient risk and improve procedure efficiency alongside a team of clinical physicians, engineers, and designers. - Led usability testing, and supported the development of the prototypes and visuals to translate key needs into a streamlined, and user-oriented experience. ### Industrial Designer @ MiaPURE Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 - Collaborated with designers and engineers to envision the next-generation form factor and features of a disruptive approach to wheeled mobility to enable users to engage in equivalent experiences in their day-to-day lives. - Gathered insights from interviews with SMEs to identify, iterate, and refine key features that generate significant value for the user. - Visualized the broader project impacts and goals to convey the value and story of the project to both internal and external members. ### Design Co-Op @ Unilever Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 - Prototype a sustainable packaging alternative for flexibles to understand End-to-End Design requirements. - Develop creative claims and conduct competitive benchmarking for new sustainable technologies. - Craft a compelling demo and internal pitch for a concept to better educate consumers on recyclability and sustainable practices. - Provide design support for cross functional teams including consumer testing mockups, renderings and artwork requests. ### Project Member and Co-Lead @ Design Innovation Illinois Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 | Champaign, Illinois, United States - During the Disney Imaginations project, I brought both technical and creative skills to the table. Heavy emphasis placed on rapid prototyping. Our group was a semi-finalist. - I Co-Lead the Michelin Competition and focused on project management while further developing my 3D modeling skills. ### Engineering Intern @ Start Up in Stealthmode Jan 2019 – Jan 2019 - Worked with mechanical engineers to prototype new revisions of their machines - Design and prototype small components in SolidWorks and Fusion 360 - Participated in research, data analysis, and data collection ### Intern @ UltimaGenomics Jan 2018 – Jan 2018 - Assisted the company with general housekeeping when the HR director was on leave - Developing my interpersonal skills, and understanding the atmosphere and culture of the workspace ## Education ### Masters of Human Computer Interaction Carnegie Mellon University ### Bachelor of Fine Arts - BFA in Industrial and Product Design University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/thomas-design --- Source: https://flows.cv/thomaswei JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/thomaswei/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-13
