# Tim Collins > — Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/timcollins1 ## Work Experience ### Member of design staff @ Perplexity Jan 2024 – Jan 2025 | San Francisco Bay Area At Perplexity, I led 0 → 1 design across major Answers verticals including Finance, Sports, Travel, and core product architecture such as Answer Modes and indexable canonical pages that unlocked novel AI experiences beyond the thread-based interaction model. My work spanned product strategy through shipped production experiences used by millions of people every day. Across each initiative, I designed for web, iOS, and Android while developing a first-principles understanding of the opportunities and constraints of AI systems at scale, a thread that continues into my next venture. As design DRI for business partnerships, I also helped facilitate collaborations with OpenTable, TripAdvisor, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roger Federer, and others. I was also a DRI on the developer experience side, focused on improving the discoverability and usability of web components. While senior frontend engineers managed the internal design system itself, I created a separate design system home in MDX that pulled in live component previews and custom Tailwind classes as a live-updating source of truth. This helped maintain consistency and made it easier for new engineers to ramp up quickly. I’m grateful to have worked closely with an exceptional group of collaborators, including Pete Lada, Jon Michael Murphy, Gunnar Gray, Andy Chung, Henry Modisett, Jon Staff, Jeff Grimes, Raman Malik, Vova, and many others. ### Founding Designer @ Kopperfield Jan 2022 – Jan 2024 I work closely with the founders to bring 0-1 product initiatives to life, rapidly generate ready-to-build designs, in addition to stewarding the design function and brand as we scale the company. I've also had the privilege to lead the company through a brand redesign, build out own brand asset library, design system, and marketing materials to help the team move fast with the highest quality design possible. ### Founding Designer @ Teleport Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 | Remote As the founding designer at Teleport, I had the privilege of working closely with the CEO to bring to life new products that reimagined social media for Gen Z. We created a social video diary called Mood that allowed people to share their life without filters or the need to perform like TikTok or Reels. I was responsible for all aspects of product design, positioning, and marketing videos. Mentored junior teammates in learning to become high output designers through the use of a rigorous and accurate design process, prototyping, and collaboration skills. ### Product Designer @ Instagram Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | San Francisco, California, United States At Instagram I worked on Reels and Camera team.I led design initiatives for creation and audio tools. My specific focus was on enabling all people of any skill-level to create Reels with just a few taps to drive our top-level creation metrics. I leveraged deep experience with mobile prototyping, audio engineering, and video production to take complex workflows and boil them down to simple and intuitive controls that extended the creative abilities of people at scale. My role was highly cross-functional in nature—working with IG Creative Lab, Reels on Facebook, Computational photography, IG Stories, to stay aligned and consistent across new products in development. ### Product Designer on Creative X @ Facebook Jan 2019 – Jan 2021 | San Francisco Our goal on Creative X is to bring emotional resonance to Facebook's Family of apps. I help identify opportunities that leverage the talents of our art directors, writers, and producers; in addition to helping them integrate product principles to scale the impact of their work. XFN partners include Stories, Computational Photography and Facebook Communities. ### Product designer on Portal @ Facebook Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Menlo Park I designed and prototyped the Home Screen, Device Setup, Onboarding, and Messenger integration. Worked within tight-deadlines due to the nature of hardware development and reviewed work often with Facebook leadership. ### Product Designer @ Dropbox Jan 2014 – Jan 2017 | San Francisco Search V2 Collaborated with our VP of product Todd Jackson and design direction Adam Polselli to create North Star prototypes to get the whole company excited at all-hands. Tactically designed V1 implementation across mobile and desktop that made search more powerful and intuitive. Crafted solutions that reduced the perceived loading time as we had short-term engineering limitations around speed. Mobile Design DRI Was responsible for all product design across iOS, Android, and Windows phone. Provided guidance, mentoring designers new to mobile design, and maintained a high bar of quality and ease-of-use. I worked closely with engineering to continuously streamline our process and eliminate pain points. Document Scanner Led design and partnered closely with the Computer Vision/Machine Learning team to create a beautiful and seamless scanning experience. Went deep on understanding the machine learning implementation and through prototyping designed an 1:1 interaction that gracefully "lifted" content off of the page you were scanning. Document & Image Previews Led design for how files, images, and video show up across all platforms. This included how previews worked from a higher-level interaction model down to the exact pixels for how we render all file types. Partnered with user-research to understand collaboration workflows and led the design of comments and annotations. ### Product Designer on Groups @ Facebook Jan 2013 – Jan 2014 Joined Groups as the 4th team member. Was responsible for design as we scaled Groups from 300m-1B monthly active users. Designed and prototyped the Groups Mobile App which later launched under Facebook Creative Labs. Had an emphasis on cross-platform consistency, craftsmanship, and scalability to lower-end devices. Had the privilege of reviewing work on a bi-weekly basis with Mark Zuckerberg and Chris Cox throughout the development phase of the Groups Mobile App. ### Design Intern @ Method Jan 2013 – Jan 2013 | New York ### Freelance Product Designer @ Friends of The Web Jan 2012 – Jan 2013 ### Design Intern @ Pentagram Jan 2012 – Jan 2013 | New York ### Design Intern @ Post Typography Jan 2012 – Jan 2013 | Baltimore ### Design Intern @ Agnes Studio Jan 2011 – Jan 2012 | Cleveland, Ohio, United States ## Education ### Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Graphic Design Maryland Institute College of Art ### Bachelor of Fine Arts - BFA in Design Cleveland Institute of Art ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/timcollinsdesign --- Source: https://flows.cv/timcollins1 JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/timcollins1/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-13
