# Tonya N. > PhD Candidate at UC Berkeley | HCI, Responsible AI & Policy, Participatory Systems for AI Location: Berkeley, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/tonyan I’m on the job market. Happy to connect! Personal website: https://www.tonyanguyen.com/ I’m a PhD candidate at UC Berkeley’s School of Information. I study algorithmic systems, focusing on deployments in high-stakes settings, and how to enact human values in system design and AI policy. I rely on mixed methods (qual + quant + experiments + statistical analyses), stakeholder engagement, and design methods to facilitate my work. In particular, I'm interested in how we can measure the capabilities & risks of AI, operationalize social values/policy goals (i.e., fairness), and develop systems that augment & empowers users. A lot of my work is grounded in understanding stakeholders, diagnosing problems & opportunities, and determining a path forward — whether that be devising a method, policy, or building a system. Previously, I’ve collaborated with Microsoft Research (FATE/STAC), Stanford HCI Group, the Berkeley Institute of Design, Berkeley AI research, and the Center for Law & Technology at UC Berkeley. I did my undergrad in computer science, critical theory, and design at UC Berkeley. ## Work Experience ### Doctoral Student @ UC Berkeley School of Information Jan 2020 – Present | Berkeley, California, United States - UC Dissertation Fellow (2025) - Awarded Meta Research grant; Fairness in Two-Sided Markets: "Community-centered design of school assignment mechanisms for equity" (2022-2023) - Center for Technology, Society, and Policy Fellowship (2021-2022) - NSF GRFP Honorable Mention ### PhD Research Intern @ Microsoft Jan 2025 – Jan 2025 | New York, New York, United States I led community engagement and participatory workshops to validate how we measure “representational harm” (e.g., stereotyping, omission/erasure) in generative AI. We translated these concepts into a labeling rubric and evaluation schema that teams can operationalize for fine-tuning/SFT data annotation. Outcome: validated, community-grounded criteria and benchmark sets to quantify bias in model outputs and inform policy decisions. ### Undergraduate Research Assistant @ UC Berkeley Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences (EECS) Jan 2018 – Jan 2020 | Berkeley, CA ### Undergraduate Research Assistant @ Stanford University Jan 2019 – Jan 2019 ### Undergraduate Student Instructor @ Berkeley Center of New Media Jan 2019 – Jan 2019 ### User Research Coordinator, Product Designer @ UC Berkeley Basic Needs Security Committee Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 | Berkeley, CA ### User Research Lead | Data & Communications Director @ Associated Students of the University of California Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 • Leading an interdisciplinary team to apply data science, user research, and design thinking to public policy, building products, and marketing campaigns • Designed surveys and organized field research to examine educational experiences and inform stakeholders, investors, and product teams • Recruited and managed the UX research team, screened applicants, and scheduled research participants for interviews and studies ### CS61B Academic Intern @ UC Berkeley Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences (EECS) Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 ### Product Designer @ ASUC Student Union Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Berkeley, CA ### Director of Design @ Berkeley Political Review Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Berkeley, CA • Spearheaded redesign of Berkeley Political Review's brand identity. • Led a team of six designers to reproduce a 45+ page semesterly magazine. • Created a design committee to brainstorm new marketing concepts, design club merchandise, and make design more accessible to all club members. • Created graphics, organized layout design, and determined semesterly cover pages. ### Mentor @ CollegeSpring Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | Oakland, CA • Mentored a group of 10 high school students for a semester at an academy, focusing on providing underserved students a quality education. • Created lesson plans and taught them SAT math, writing, and reading, improving scores by 300+ points on average. ### Graphic Designer @ Innovative Design Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 • Created graphics, logos, and flyers pro-bono for on-campus entities ### Graphic Designer @ ASUC Student Union Jan 2016 – Jan 2017 | Berkeley, CA ## Education ### Doctor of Philosophy - PhD in Human Computer Interaction, Algorithmic Decision Making, Participatory Systems for AI University of California, Berkeley ### Bachelors in Human Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Critical Theory, Design Innovation University of California, Berkeley ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/tonyanguyen - Website: https://tonyanguyen.com/ --- Source: https://flows.cv/tonyan JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/tonyan/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-05
