# Tony Chen > Software Engineer at Brembo Inspiration Lab Advanced Technology Center R&D | Robotics Engineer | Photographer Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/tonychen1 Currently at Brembo’s global R&D advanced technology center in Sunnyvale, I'm researching and developing software and electronics for the SENSIFY™ intelligent by-wire braking platform, working at the intersection of edge AI, predictive analytics, mechatronic algorithms, vehicle dynamics control, IoT comm, and 5G V2X connectivity, as well as designing cloud integration layers and API toolchains that bridge Brembo’s backend infrastructure with OEM partner services. I collaborate with university research labs, startups, and industry partners to conduct early-stage R&D and POCs that define where Brembo is headed in the next 5 years. Previously at Flexiv, I specialized in developing POC applications that demonstrate the real-world value of adaptive robots. I worked closely with clients to understand their operational challenges, then design and validate custom solutions that carry out measurable technical and business impact, by integrating advanced force control, vision, planning, and AI into field-ready systems. I'm a Robotics Engineering graduate from UC Santa Cruz with a minor in Electrical Engineering. My academic research work spans autonomous systems, control theory, mechatronics, embedded systems, and cybersecurity, with a focus on enhancing the intelligence and reliability of autonomous vehicle navigation in complex environments. I’m driven by the challenge of making things intelligent—reliably, affordably, and at scale. Outside of engineering, photography has been a parallel pursuit of mine for nearly a decade. I enjoy exploring, from portraits and events to candid street moments, nature, and macro... always passionate about capturing focus, timing, and composition in the field. ## Work Experience ### Platform Software Engineer @ Brembo Jan 2026 – Present | Sunnyvale, CA - Develop ML sensing and control solutions spanning hardware selection, firmware-level inference, and CAN bus integration for intelligent brake-by-wire systems - Benchmark and evaluate embedded edge AI platforms across automotive MCU architectures, optimizing real-time inference performance against safety-critical latency and resource constraints - Prototype sensor-to-actuator pipelines for real-time environmental classification, bridging physical sensing hardware with vehicle control software - Integrate mechatronic subsystems with cloud infrastructure for connected vehicle interfaces, including 5G V2X platforms - Establish measurement and calibration workflows using Vector tools including CANape & CANalyzer for ECU-level data processing, signal analysis, and validation of embedded control algorithms on instrumented test vehicles - Design and instrument vehicle-level field test campaigns for novel optical sensing systems, including distributed data acquisition and synchronization pipelines - Build internal R&D tooling and workflows to accelerate iteration including evaluation frameworks and development environments - Collaborate with universities on cross-disciplinary academic research to inform long-term technology and product roadmap - Apply and explore data science solutions to extract insights from meaningful and diverse datasets across automotive domain ### Robotics Application Engineer @ Flexiv Robotics Jan 2024 – Jan 2026 | San Jose, California, United States As an Applications Engineer at Flexiv, I drove the deployment of adaptive robotic solutions across parts assembly, surface treatment, medical robotics, agriculture, and embodied-AI research. I developed proof-of-concept (POC) workcells to evaluate feasibility and demonstrate system capabilities, working closely with R&D, Sales, and global integrators to accelerate customer deployments. I delivered full-stack turnkey solutions, Git-based templates, technical training, and after-sales support that reduced integration bugs and enabled same-day system upgrades. Additionally, I authored documentation for the Python SDK/API to streamline developer onboarding, while contributing to the company's ROS2 repository to broaden adoption across robotics research labs and industrial partners. I also managed the spare parts inventory and the hardware lab. ### Thesis Research @ University of California, Santa Cruz Jan 2023 – Jan 2024 | Santa Cruz, CA - Developed an autonomous parking system for a differential-drive Amiga farming tractor. - Implemented a Nonlinear controller and two PI controllers in simulation using MATLAB and CoppeliaSim. - Applied Lyapunov stability theory to design a stable and accurate path tracking. - Conducted analysis on tractor path tracking and stability, identifying optimized feedback control strategies. - Designed 2 nested feedback controllers for handling the linear velocity control and turning rate control to achieve desired vehicle kinematics. - Modeled a Nonlinear controller to provide steering inputs to the PI controllers to steer the vehicle in a stable and convergent manner. ### Airframe Subteam Member @ UCSC Rocket Team Jan 2020 – Jan 2021 | Santa Cruz, CA - Designed and tested a high power rocket airframe through CAD, 3D printing, and CNC routing. - Competed for UC Santa Cruz at NASA Student Launch Competition with a sub-frame rocket and a full-frame rocket. - Assembled the rocket, installed the motor, assisted in flight testing in simulated environment (OpenRocket). Collaborated with colleagues on the Preliminary Design Report, Critical Design Report, and Flight Readiness Review. - Presented the results to judges at NASA Student Launch Competition. ### Staff Photographer @ South Pasadena Review Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 | South Pasadena, California, United States - Captured compelling visuals for news articles, events, feature stories, and magazines by covering sports, businesses, government meetings, and cultural festivals. - Collaborated with reporters and editors to align imagery with narratives to deliver high-quality photos under tight deadlines. - Mastered in image and video post-processing. - Adapted to diverse environments to produce impactful images for print and digital media. - Managed live event coverage, real-time photo delivery, and archive organization to support newsroom operations efficiently. ## Education ### B.S.
