# Whitney Roy > Software Engineer at Adap.tv Location: San Mateo, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/whitneyroy I enjoy learning new and interesting things. I have picked up a variety of new skills here and I am eager to put them to use. My experiences go well beyond the work I have done as a student, researcher, and software engineer. Over the course of my life I have raised livestock, sold fruit at the town square and in farmers' markets, ran a booth for a political party at the county fair, and reported election results (to a news organization). ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Adap.tv Jan 2013 – Jan 2016 | San Mateo, CA ### Summer Intern @ Cubic Transportation Systems Jan 2012 – Jan 2012 I worked in a team focused on creating an app that would enable people to use their NFC-enabled smartphones to pay for their transit. I worked largely on the server portion of the project. It was a Tomcat server written in Java that utilized MVC design as well as the Spring and Hibernate toolsets. Via Hibernate, the server communicated with a Postgres database. ### Computer Science Tutor @ Hendrix College Jan 2010 – Jan 2011 I provide assistance to students in the introductory computer science course at Hendrix College. This assistance may take the form of helping a student to learn a concept or helping a student to complete an assignment. ### Mathematics Tutor @ Hendrix College Jan 2010 – Jan 2011 I provide assistance to students in Functions and Models (college algebra) and Calculus I and II. This aid may take the form of helping students to finish an assignment or to study concepts. ### Academic Peer Mentor @ Hendrix College Jan 2009 – Jan 2010 Academic Peer Mentors (APMs) serve to aid students in becoming acclimated to Hendrix College. We keep in contact with our assigned group of Freshman students and make sure that we are available to answer their questions. ### Teaching Assistant @ Hendrix College Jan 2009 – Jan 2009 I served as a teaching assistant for CSCI 135 Robotics Exploration Studio. This is a course in which students learn basic physics and computer science by using Lego Mindstorms NXT robots. I served to answer student questions and aid them in completing tasks. ### Researcher @ UC Berkeley Jan 2010 – Jan 2010 I was part of a group studying the Asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem (ATSP) headed by Dr. Satish Rao. We looked at many aspects of the problem such as various heuristics and approximation algorithms and the Held-Karp relaxation. This work was done as part of Berkeley's SUPERB REU. ### Researcher @ Texas A&M University Jan 2009 – Jan 2009 I worked with Dr. Jennifer Welch and Dr. Hyunyoung Lee on improving an algorithm for distributed storage. Over the summer we were able to make the algorithm optimally fault-tolerant, decrease the message passing involved in the algorithm, and more clearly state aspects of the algorithm. This work was done as part of a DREU (distributed REU) funded by the CRA-W. Also, this work resulted in my first publication. ### Software Engineer @ Hendrix College Jan 2008 – Jan 2008 I worked as part of four-member team to create a game using ActionScript. This was part of a three-week project supervised by Dr. Carl Burch. The point of the project was for us to use a language we had limited experience with and produce a polished result. My largest contributions were creating the menu, implementing the "power ups", and some of the artwork. The game can be found here: http://ozark.hendrix.edu/odyssey/cycles/index.php ### Research Assistant @ Hendrix College Jan 2008 – Jan 2008 Brett Geren and I worked under Dr. Ferrer to create an application for use with Lego Mindstorms NXT robots. The application (written in Java) was designed to allow users to create fuzzy control systems for controlling a robot's behavior. The application could upload code (written in Lejos NXJ) to the Mindstorms. I largely worked on the backend components such as the production of Lejos NXJ code from the user input. ## Education ### MS in Computer Science UC San Diego ### BA in Computer Science and Mathematics Hendrix College ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/whitney-roy-10277028 --- Source: https://flows.cv/whitneyroy JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/whitneyroy/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-05
