Project Title: Software Development for analysis of EBSD data acquired through an SEM
Project Supervisor: Dr Carol Trager-Cowan
Project Summary:
The advanced, scanning electron microscope (SEM) technique of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), provides information on the structural properties of materials non-destructively with a spatial resolution of tens of nanometers. Interpretation of the acquired EBSD patterns allows the orientation, crystal structure and strain distribution in a sample to be mapped. The project involved development of data and image processing software to analyse EBSD pattern datasets acquired from Alluminium-Nitride (AlN) thin films and nanostructures. The results provided us with compelling misorientation maps that correspond closely to images taken with electron channelling contrast imaging (ECCI). It was discovered that these maps provide a quantitative measure of misorientations in such films as AlN and other crystalline samples.
Skills demonstrated/acquired:
• An advanced use of both C++ and Python programming, specifically in the domain of image analysis techniques and manipulation of large data sets.
• Resource gathering and quick learning. Having had no prior experience in the broad field of Crystallography I had to learn new concepts and apply them promptly. This was achieved by seeking out meaningful conversations with specialists within and outwith the department. Complementing this I discovered relevant papers and techniques to accomplish the goal of the research project in time.
Working within the Semiconductor Spectroscopy and Devices research group of the Strathclyde Physics Department was a fine experience. Alongside being introduced to cutting edge technology such as the SEM, I had the opportunity to collaborate with experts in the field of Crystallography. The two links below are portals to research papers published in OSA and IOPscience that use results from my summer project.
