# Yulia Astakhova > Software Engineer at Nextdoor Location: Oakland, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/yuliaastakhova I had the most exciting 10+ years of experience developing high-loaded web services (mostly Java/Scala) for companies like Yandex (Google's competitor in Russia), Linkedin and Nextdoor. I also tried myself as a technical founder for startup Consensual together with my partner Day Waterbury. Proficient with Java, capable of working with Scala, Python, C++, Javascript, etc. Experienced working with large legacy code-bases, building distributed architecture and data pipelines, microservices and RESTful API's, working on offline tasks, backend and frontend (though backend is definitely the preference). I enjoy working with passionate mission-oriented teams, collaborate with others on projects, learn and mentor. Within my past projects, I had to work shoulder to shoulder with data scientists, site reliability engineers, cross-team peers, as a result I know the price and value of effective communication and effective collaboration. Lately, my focus is directed towards environmental projects and companies making a social impact. Technologies are a powerful tool and hopefully can serve to make the world a better place. Let me know if you would be interested in talking about my current position at Nextdoor. We are hiring and I would be happy to spread the world about my experience at Nextdoor and the company itself, my favorite company honestly. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Nextdoor Jan 2020 – Present | San Francisco Bay Area Nextdoor is a company building a community, neighborhood by neighborhood. It takes on almost an impossible challenge of bringing together people of different backgrounds, diverse cultures, with different mindsets, opinions, views and creating an environment where everyone is welcomed and heard. I am proud to be part of this very humane project. My work mainly focuses on notification infrastructure of Nextdoor to keep members updated and engaged. ### Technical Founder @ Consensual Jan 2018 – Jan 2020 | Oakland Consensual is the future of relating between humans, a platform making dealing with day-to-day agreements manageable. It helps to create, negotiate and track the agreements in an easy way. Together with my partner we developed an effective flow as a proof of concept, a prototype website (desktop, mobile + Cordova-powered app) running on Meteor / Angular / Mongo stack and are working on attracting investments. ### Senior Software Engineer @ LinkedIn Jan 2015 – Jan 2018 | San Francisco Bay Area When I joined Linkedin Learning it was facing a challenge of merging courses from Lynda.com with its native course database to provide an extended base of online knowledge to users of both services with an improved experience by new recommendations, engagement emails and enriched supporting data associated with the courses (like social proof of course’s popularity). I worked with the full stack of Linkedin Learning from offline processes of building recommendations to frontend functionality being involved closely with Lynda engineers, Linkedin Learning data science team and collaborating with surrounding eco-system of Linkedin services (including propagating functionality of Linkedin Learning to the main Linkedin pages). ### Software Engineer @ LinkedIn Jan 2013 – Jan 2015 | San Francisco Bay Area I’m a member of the Product Security Team. Our team's goal is to protect the privacy of our members' data, guarantee the safety of outgoing links on the site, prevent scraping and any form of abuse, etc. Projects I worked on include: 2-step authentication, protection from address book import abuse, protection of email lookup in partners API, safe browsing for Mobile platform, real-time protection from scraping, contacts verification and maintenance of current security infrastructure at Linkedin. All projects had a strong requirement for performing in a multi-datacenter environment, being robust and receiving huge traffic. For example, the anti-scraping service processes over 7k messages/s per server. While working as a backend engineer I also contributed to the team's professional growth. I participated in the initiative to improve unit test coverage of our products, supported introduction of agile, lead training of other team members for the services I’m responsible for. My last initiative was promoting of usage of Scala inside our team and now I’m working on the first Scala front-end for internal security purposes. Technologies: Java/Scala, Play, Oracle, Couchbase, Voldemort, Kafka, Hive ### Lead Developer @ Yandex Jan 2010 – Jan 2012 I lead the development of Yandex.Rabota (http://rabota.yandex.ru), Russia's largest vertical job search engine aggregator, in a team of 3 developers. Some figures: ~1mln entities (2.5Gb data), 16 machines, 2 services: 140requests/sec peak with 99% latency <140ms; 60 req/sec peak with 99% latency <50ms. A single search query involves entity recognition in the query text, execution, snippet generation, faceted aggregation etc. Technologies: Java, C++, MySQL, BDB, proprietary search server. ### Software Developer @ Yandex Jan 2008 – Jan 2009 Yandex.Auto internal CMS. I developed, this time from scratch (I was the only team member), a CMS of similar purpose for Yandex.Auto (http://auto.yandex.ru/), a vertical search engine over used car sale offers. Technologies: Java, Oracle, Python, proprietary ORM. Yandex.Auto statistical graphics I developed (again as the sole team member) the high-loaded back-end parts of Yandex.Auto that allow users to see various statistical graphs of car prices, with real-time filtering. Example: http://tinyurl.com/auto-statistics-example Technologies: Java, MySQL, Lucene Yandex.Auto search subscriptions I developed (sole team member again) the "search result subscriptions" feature for Yandex.Auto. It allows users to quickly receive new search results about a particular query by email. There's a lot of contrived business logic about managing different accounts and email addresses of a user, who might or might not be logged in, etc. Technologies: Java, MySQL, Memcached, proprietary mail sender ### Software Developer @ Yandex Jan 2007 – Jan 2008 Yandex.Market internal CMS. Yandex.Market (http://market.yandex.ru/) is a vertical search engine over e-shop offers, aggregating them and binding to high-quality data about the goods which is maintained partly by human operators, partly by machine-learning algorithms. The CMS is a large (100's KLOC) legacy Java web-application that allows operators to edit this data and assists their interaction with machine-learning services (such as automatic classification). I was mostly working on the operator/classifier GUI and maintenance of other parts of the system - both back-end (Java, MySQL/Oracle/MSSQL, Lucene) and front-end (HTML+XML+XSLT) parts. ## Education ### Master of Science (MSc) Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace and Instrumentation ### 356 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/jastakhova --- Source: https://flows.cv/yuliaastakhova JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/yuliaastakhova/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-11
