# Zachary Showalter > Distributed Systems Software Engineer (Rust/Golang) Location: Rochester, New York, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/zacharyshowalter I am a young Software Engineer that bercame interested in computers nearly 15 years ago. My journey programming started in the 7th grade with the esoteric language RobotC for Lego Mindstorm robots. It later continued in my freshman year of high school when I took the only programming class in my high school and learned basic, and started teaching myself python via the classic turtles and project Euler problems. The following summer I had the opportunity to attend Leap@CMU and listen to guest lectures from the Computer Science faculty at Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science. After graduating from high school, I attended the Rochester Institute of Technology. My early years at RIT were marred by struggles in my personal life that affected my academics. However, by the end of my time at RIT, I had made the Dean's List twice, had three semester long Co-Op experiences that prepared me to work in the industry, and had learned about many of the areas that I liked to work in through my later classes. In my final semester I took a course called Advanced Programming Concepts: Rust, that led to me falling in love with the language. Now my current interest is to design and implement performant systems that solve meaningful real-world problems. My dream is to spend my time creating and maintaining open source software written in Rust and C that improves the lives of its users. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer, Infrastructure @ Espresso Systems Jan 2024 – Present | Rochester, New York, United States In my role on the integrations team, I make contributions to enable compatibility between existing scalability projects in the Ethereum ecosystem, and the Espresso network. ### Software Engineer (Rust) @ CasperLabs Jan 2022 – Jan 2024 | Zug, Switzerland In this role I contributed to a variety of the open source ecosystem projects and occasionally to the open source node at CasperLabs Specific highlights include: -Contributing to the design and implementation of an soft real time SSE event monitoring tool.
